My take is that indeed, the ground troop invasion was a litmus test (since the casualty rate would/will be the worst since Vietnam) of which top brass would put loyalty to Hegseth above the lives of their soldiers.
It’s a purge akin to what Stalin did before Barbarossa: most of the experienced/competent generals got purged because they were more attuned to their military experience than blind loyalty and fervor.
And while in Stalin’s example it came as a surprise (edit: the resulting shitshow, that is), now it’s the main reason why „opening the straight“ or „boots on the ground“ is taking so long. Because everyone with 2 neurons to spark together knows that from the entry point of the straight, to Kharg island itself, everyone and every ship is a sitting duck. It’s why the EU gave Trump the finger when he demanded they put their ships in first.
With Iran’s ballistic and drone capabilities, It’s at best akin to the Russian „meat wave“ tactics that they’ve been using in Ukraine. At worst it’s a series of suicide missions for shaky gains, with thousands of lives lost and Billions in destroyed gear just to hold Kharg for about a month.
But Trump’s administration is built on being the „strong man“, and Hegseth has more balls than brains to actually think it through strategically.
