Living in Scotland I hadn’t realised just how pervasive this shit was until I drove through Middlesbrough last week. Fucking flags on every streetlamp, tangled up in tree branches, telephone lines. It was embarrassing.
The two yoots on the single electric motorbike wearing balaclavas as they sped down the pavement was the icing on top of the brief, unpleasant experience.
They’re a bunch of morons using right-wing dog whistle politics, but I really do have to wonder how on the flip-side this could be seen as „causing alarm and distress“. It’s a flag, not a machine gun turret.
My wife (an immigrant, and no idea about or interest in British politics) was with me when we drove through an area where they’re fond of putting these flags up, and commented „those flags are really pretty, why don’t they do it around our way?“ She’s also from a country where they love displaying their national flag.
I think we should do more of it. They’re cheap, easy to put up, take the symbolism back from the right-wing morons.

I’m not even against this in principle, I am more against tbe tackiness and unproffessional job of it.
As someone who works for the local council, I don’t like the flags, I don’t like tax payers money paying to get them removed during unsociable hours so it’s safe for them, or the cost of actually removing them, It’s almost as bad as flytipping, littering, everything that causes people to pay more tax, where it could be better spent elsewhere. That being said, if a flag is causing you „alarm and distress“ you need to give your head a wobble to realise how privileged you are if a bit of fabric offends you.
The Right really do have a bizarre understanding of patriotism. They constantly vote for the most destructive parties who do nothing but make us all worse off and provide nothing for the future, then when times are inevitably tough as a result of their voting choices they seem to think popping a flag on a lamppost will make us all feel better about the country they destroyed.
It ain’t working. It’s never worked. It’s just performative bollocks with no meaning.
