Where are these community mailboxes usually located? At a general location or the entrance to a street? End of street?

Wow. End of an era. I’m really disappointed in this choice. I’m not in a position to judge whether it was the right choice, but this is quite sad.

In doing this will make Canada post sustainable for decades.

Maybe they’ll stop delivering junk mail… I feel for Seniors and the Disabled.

Gotta love when a service is downgraded…

Gee, I wonder if we will see the same opposition to this as we saw a decade or more ago when they tried to end door to door.
Imagine what better shape Canada Post would be in if they had.

People still get door to door delivery?!

About time. Most never had it to begin with.

But how will I get all the boatload of flyers that I immediately dump into my recycling bin?

Sign of the times. We used to have milk men, and door to door salesmen. Time to move on.

Even in 3rd world countries you receive mail door to door.

Moved to a place with a community mailbox.. I just swing by once a week, don’t miss home delivery at all… Canada post is steadily losing money to deliver random junk flyers… I get a letter of any importance maybe once every 3-4 weeks and I would prefer those via email if I could…
ARunOfTheMillPerson on
I think they could further reduce a lot of the daily workload with a better public method to opt out of flyer delivery.
I’ve never seen a condo lobby bin that wasn’t full of them, so it’s mostly garbage in garbage out on a loop and that feels like a pretty poor use of resources at every stage of it.

Oh well thats a major change but I could see it coming. My community is likely to loose our post office soon because were too small to be worth servicing anymore. Canada post warned us that services could be cut as soon as 2027 in our area.

Be prepare the community mail box gets full and people didn’t collect their packages and made those boxes unusable all the time.

I thought this was an April Fools joke when I first read this.
So, Canada Post is losing money. So what? It is a public service. Like the Library, garbage collection, Fire Department or Police.

I won’t miss it. Even junk mail has diminished significantly in the last decade. We could easily do without the three regular pieces of mail we still get. And we really could not opt out of those. Trying to think about where they’ll put the new community boxes in our area. It won’t be in front of my house. We have a fire hydrant, a bulky cable box and a large plate covering the in ground hydro system. We hit the jackpot already.

My only concern is the theft, especially parcels.
I may have it diverted to Shoppers and go every two weeks. I only get mail about two days a week and that is mostly from RBC or the government. I might be able to get the government mail by email, but RBC Estates are a little clueless.

They do door to door? I’ve always had to pick up Canada Post items at the post office.

I’m at the point where they can delete my mailbox and not provide a new one.

Maybe next can be mail once a week.
Even with community mail boxes, little reason for daily mail.

I have very little sympathy to those losing door-to-door delivery. New communities built in the last several decades have been on community mailboxes. Many small towns and rural communities are required to use post offices to get their mail.
I usually see articles mentioning the inconvenience to seniors and the disabled because of an end of door-to-door delivery, but no one ever mentions the millions of seniors and disabled Canadians who already don’t have this service.

Lettermail and Parcel Delivery are generally separate (unless it’s a small package). Are they ending both, or just lettermail? Lettermail is kind of useless. Parcel mail is sometimes useful.

It makes zero sense to me that Canada Post delivers every day. Nobody’s sending anything urgent via Canada Post.
2, maybe 3 times a week would be PLENTY.

Can’t wait to step in all the dog poo and dog pee surrounding the boxes from when people bring their dogs to get the mail, then let their dog poop on the grass and pee on the mailbox legs. I have a neighbor with one of those stupid community Library boxes and almost daily, I can see people walking their dogs, they almost always stop to pee on the library post. It’s so disgusting.
