I think in a lot of situations, if the goal margin is the same (like 6-0 and 1-7 for Brazil) people often pick the one with the most goals against as the worst one.

Also the 1-7 against Germany was a semifinal defeat in a home World Cup, so I’d definitely say that one is worse than the 6-0 against Uruguay in 1920.

    But very interesting map regardless.

    Look at that.

England men’s team has actually won matches occasionally

is crimea russian? strange that in this map some things are shown as de facto, others as de iure.

  4. Imo a better way to present this would be to show the full world map on one slide and then do other slides for places like Africa / Europe / SEA where countries are more packed in.

  5. How can you argue that a 0-6 loss is bigger than a 1-7 loss? It’s literally one more goal scored against the losing team. Every goal given is a hit to morale, a 7th goal is a bigger loss than a 6th goal, regardless if the margins are the same.

And that’s even without context. With context, brazil’s 0-6 to uruguay was at a time where Brazil wasn’t a football powerhouse. Whereas the loss to germany was in a context that Brazil had 5 world cups and Germany had 3, it’s supposedly the biggest teams playing for soccer dominance, and you get THRASHED IN HOME SOIL.

I was surprised that Paraguay’s was the USA, but from what I can see, Paraguay’s worst defeat was an 8-0 loss to Argentina in 1926.

Denmark beat the French B team 9-0. 3 days later they beat the A team 17-1 in 1908. Today we can’t even beat the Czech republic.
