      japan could probably turn a functional nuke with delivery system in a matter of months if they needed. I imagine they have plans to do so already. as the US becomes less reliable on all things ally related, they’d be stupid not to.

      That depends on the isotope composition of the Plutonium. I assume most of it was produced by extracting it from regular nuclear waste. Now, if you leave the fuel for as long as possible in the reactor, like it happens in commercial power production, then you get a lot of Pu-240 which is rather problematic for the use in nuclear weapons.

      There are two major drawbacks for this so called reactor-grade plutonium. A) Due a higher spontaneous fission rate the nuke is more likely to fizzle, or has to be designed for a lower yield. B) Pu-240 is more radioactive which complicates bomb design and can cause health problems for the personnel in proximity of the weapons. For the latter reason the US Navy only uses „super-grade“ plutonium for their nuclear arsenal.

      It isn’t impossible to turn that plutonium into weapons or that Japan has produced a limited amount of weapons-grade plutonium. But I really doubt they could produce thousands of weapons with it, especially if you consider Japan’s cultural proclivities to prioritize quality over quantity.

      Japan is what you call a ‚para-nuclear state‘. Same goes for most of Europe and Canada, but Japan is the best example of this.

      There are even conglomerates within some of those countries that can build both fission and fusion bombs all on their own.

      Ugh, this again.

      PLA Daily (Chinese Military news outlet) always says stuff like this. It’s little more than propaganda and saber-rattling.

      Japan’s nuclear power plants used to provide 30% of the nation’s energy, so yeah they have the materials to make nukes. But they obviously don’t have the *intent*.

      It’s the equivalent of pointing at a farmer and saying “look, they can make dozens of bombs!” because they own materials like fuel and fertilizer…
