I want conservative opinion of forced labour in US prisons

>Michael Chong, the Conservative foreign affairs critic, wrote to Mark Carney Friday asking him if his assessment is “that Uyghur forced labour has and is being used” in China.
He also asked him to clarify if, during his official visit to China in January, he pro-actively raised the issue of human rights. Mr. Chong also asked if Mr. Carney is committed to upholding trade agreements that require Ottawa to prevent the importation of products produced using forced labour.
Michael Ma, a Liberal MP who [crossed the floor from the Conservatives](https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-mp-michael-ma-crosses-floor-liberals-carney-conservatives-markham/) in December, has been under fire for questions he asked of an expert during a meeting of the Commons Industry Committee on Thursday.

What’s the Conservative position on the labour used to create the cell phone they are all holding, the computer in each of their offices, the TV in each of their homes, etc.?

No option is going to be perfect, we obviously cant be so reliant on USA. China is not perfect but they are a logical alternative.

God forbid we expect the Prime Minister to be clearly vocally anti-slavery.

Conservatives always love to act like China is the greatest danger to us all the while we’re literally getting threats of annexation from the south. China is far from perfect, but their interest is pretty much just to make money which we need as well at this time and even moreso because we need more diverse trading partners.

Alright, I’m seeing this enough to think it’s not a real story. What’s the actual narrative they’re trying to avoid?

This is such an easy thing to do and to clear up.
“ Canada condemns the use of forced labor in China“
What is the government afraid of

Gotta try to make this a controversy about carney somehow I guess.

This is nothing more than woke anti-economic virtue signaling by the conservatives. In other words: tone-deaf hypocritical contrarian BS.

How about we are again all forced labor? We believe worker should enjoy capitalism as well as owners.
Devourer_of_felines on
Realistically Carney is going to offer a bland non statement like ‘Canada believes in fair labour practices for all nations’. Anything more strongly worded risks economic backlash from the CCP and that’s not something a middle power leader juggling China and U.S. relations can afford

He couldn’t condemn it when he was chair of Brookfield, he won’t do it as prime minister.

Liberal apologism and gaslighting incoming. They will boycott the fuck out of anything Israel related (understandable) but turn a blind eye to this because the party told them to.

Good.
Carney gets away with dodging way too many questions. And this one is important.
I don’t want a speech. I want clarity without the usual Liberal bullshit.

Are these the same ones who whine and complain about increasing minimum wage or working conditions in canada?

Yes or no. Short answer only please, right Mr. Ma?
BettinBrando on
Mark Carney is looking at this strictly from an economical view. We are losing the US as a trade partner, he wants China and India to fill that spot.
However his own Party, the LPC, pointed the finger at the Indian government for an assassination on Canadian soil. And China is known for human rights violations.
If Carney could day „Look, if we want to keep our economy from catering we need to make deals with countries with baggage.“ But he’s not allowed to say that kind of thing here. We care more about looking good then living good.

Yes China uses forced labour its also a huge economy whose access we need, NDP, CPC they’d both be doing the same thing as the LPC right now.

The correct answer should be ‘we know each countries has its flaws, Canada is not out to change them, we will work with all countries in trade as long as our own core believes are not infringed.’ If Canadians can work with current US we can work with anyone.

Seriously I don’t care.
I want Canada to find new trade partners.
I want better lives for canadians.
If we have to make some trade deals, with countries that have different values than ours, so be it.
We don’t really have a choice anyway

Considering they’re doing a fundraiser in Michael Ma’s riding, I don’t think they have any intention of condemning forced labour camps in China.
Fortunately for voters, this is actually pretty big, so I sure hope they consider Mark Carneys lack of any words on the subject and previous actions (or lack thereof) to be indicative of who as a whole the part is.
Carney must owe China money or something. Maybe it’s related to his traveling to China before he ran for LPC leader.

He’ll never be critical against china. China owns him. Hence the China-Canada strategic partnership he signed.
Trump/US bad- China Green communism good. Trading long term sovereignty for short term cheap consumerism.

If we are this pedantic. Why don’t we talk about how much business we do with the Saudis. In fact, most of the countries Canada trades with do not abide by Canadian values. That is the world we live in. Do conservatives suddenly want to kill globalism over virtue-signaling? A bit ironic.

Who cares? Human rights will always take a backseat to trade.
Conservatives cannot convince people to not buy chinese EVs so they are back to the good ol‘ „china bad“ narrative again.

Can the conservatives just work on becoming a party Canadians support based on their own merits rather than constantly just trying to find some angle to discredit Carney?
