  1. Fucking left. All talk,

What a team compassionate idea. Why don’t you fucking figure out how to get them out of there. Or even getting access to these facilities is a better start.

    Actually do something!

  2. coffeeandtrout on

There should be criminal penalties for people who broke the law, and people who have been harmed have the right to sue. This blanket reparations talk doesn’t make any sense, and I wish my representative would be paying more attention to the real issues, stopping these morons rather than performative acting.

  3. Who is supposed to pay those reparations, the American public? Fuck that. It’s bad enough we have the Trump admin without having to also pay for their mistakes.

While I agree with her, this isn’t the time. First we need them to take off masks and get warrants. Then we gotta get them to stop killing and beating people. Then we gotta get them to stop kidnapping US citizens and people legally working the process. Then we gotta prosecute those who abused power. Then we can talk reparations. Jumping to this doesn’t help.

If there is a massive sweep during the midterms you can bet your ass that the Democrats going to give it all back to the GOP

if the Dems want to have good mid-terms, they will encourage her to shut up.

    Ugh. She bothers me.

It’s all lip service for the us on left.

This will never happen. She knows it will never happen.

Im for this. BTW, let’s get the reparations for generational slavery and racism and economic discrimination. Let’s provide reparations to Gazans and Cubans. Let’s look at the inequalities everywhere.

  9. Fuken dems first it’s for slavery now it’s for illegals stop being the welfare state.

  10. If you democrats closed the boarder this would not even be a thing dumb ass Biden administration

  11. Scarlettail on

I mean yeah it makes perfect sense that anyone ICE hurt or victimized should be paid back for it. Same goes for any policing really. Don’t think this is particularly controversial. If the government beats you or kidnaps your family you should be compensated.

  12. While the republicans shoot themselves in the foot, democrats respond by shooting themselves in the face

  13. If we can’t get reparations after slavery, no shot we manage to get this.

And honestly I think stuff like this does more harm than good to the party. Not because I disagree but because the struggle of democratic politicians is convincing the general public that they aren’t pro-illegal immigrant. Despite them pretty much never being so. Its about perception.

    Yeah this probably isnt productive.

A nation that governs through rhetorical grandstanding.

Don’t just pile on the left either. The center and right do the same shit.

  15. BiscottiEastern220 on

Why are we pulling defeat from the jaws of victory. Dems need to just STFU and win.

Let’s read the actual quote “And then we also need offensive actions around prosecutions,” [the Washington Democrat added Friday](https://youtu.be/q98RMNaPvWM). “We need real accountability, because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted.”

She continued, “They need to be brought before us and they need to be held [to] account for the trauma that they have created, and we are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this.” — in context its not so bad. Its just a loaded word, maybe not the best one for that statement.

  17. If only the democrats would dump these far left nutters they would do so much better in elections.

The only good thing I can say for Jayapal is that Brown from Texas is far worse.

  18. The progressive wing claims the „establishment Dems“ are „out of touch“ and „playing identity politics“ because of our support for affirmative action, but then propose ultra-unpopular stuff like this.

  19. Sissy__Fist on

This is an entirely reasonable series of positions to hold (for-profit detention centers should be destroyed; ICE should be prosecuted for their crimes; those hurt unjustly by ICE deserve compensation).

It’s just a terrible way to articulate it. „Trauma“ is overused to the point of being practically meaningless. „Reparations“ is so heavily associated in the general public’s minds with „black folks/slavery“ that it is difficult to separate and apply to a new context.

  20. pseudowoodo3 on

I don’t know what issue people have with what she said? In fact we need to go much further and throw every pig involved in this human rights catastrophe in prison.

  21. Great idea but can we focus on the fucking lawlessness and baseless war and possible draft and shit that needs to stop though

  22. Can’t even get reparations for Black Americans… which would actually be harder than this. 🫠

    **Camp Conditions:**

The Trump administration is also spending excessive amounts of money on building what can only be described as concentration camps around the country.

The living conditions at these detention centers are sickening and the federal agents who are tasked with running these camps and supervising inmates operate under little to no oversight.

The goal is to keep these inmates detained for indefinite periods of time, subjecting them to brutality and torture, depriving them of human rights and access to basic necessities; including immigration lawyers, so that they are forced to choose between self deportation or death.

*Dozens* of detainees have died in these wretched hell holes. And that’s just what’s been reported.

ICE officials can and have undercounted deaths by using what’s called the „release before death loophole.“

They’ve even admitted that if a detainee is released immediately before their death, the death is not counted as „in custody.“

Whistleblowers have also sounded the alarm about systemic underreporting of deaths, injuries, and violence. They’ve spoken up about a lack of oversight at these facilities; about the cruelty and negligence on the part of staff, about seriously flawed investigations into these horrors, and about the disgusting, dehumanizing standard of living for detainees.

Previous reviews found that nearly all of these deaths were preventable.

The causes of these deaths can be linked to severe medical neglect, delays in emergency care, preventable infectious diseases as a result of overcrowding and foul living conditions, even suicide due to lack of prevention measures.

Some deaths are attributed to preventable accidents and injuries sustained by detainees going intentionally uncared for.

Detention centers also have severe understaffing issues while inspection records are being falsified. And of course this all comes with next to no accountability.

In some cases, American citizens have been detained at these facilities and have spoken out about the nauseating and derelict conditions that inmates are forced to endure for unknown periods of time.

**“But Trump Is Only Going After ‚The Worst Of The Worst!'“**

Trump, ran on a campaign of going after the „criminals“ and „the worst of the worst.“

His supporters insist this is the case, but it is far from the reality of the situation.

The supreme Court ruled that Kilmar Garcia was unlawfully deported to one of the most dangerous places on earth after an immigration judge expressly forbade his deportation to El Salvador.

Multiple American citizens have been wrongly detained and violently assaulted, even slain at the hands of Trump’s lawless, jack-booted ICE thugs.

Data shows that the number of immigrants with criminal records who have been captured or deported is miniscule compared to the number of immigrants who have been detained with no criminal backgrounds.

ICE agents have erroneously targeted and arrested people based on non-gang affiliated tattoos and clothing.

The Trump administration has made separating families and arresting children an *intentional* policy goal.

Homeland security has deported large numbers of migrants with legal status and/or no criminal records to mega prisons while depriving them of their right to due process.

The Trump administration has been conducting illegal mass raids on job sites, targeting laborers, taxpayers, even veterans.

Masked ICE agents were throwing political dissidents and foreign students into unmarked vehicles.

The Trump administration was withholding visas to foreign students and vetting their social media accounts while demanding that universities spy on foreigners enrolled at their schools.

A report came out revealing how Stephen Miller demanded ICE agents start indiscriminately arresting and detaining anyone vaguely perceived as a foreigner in order to meet an excessive deportation quota.

The Trump administration gave immigration agents permission to stop, question and detain people based on their „apparent ethnicity,“ language or place of work.

ICE continues targeting asylum seekers, green card carriers, visa holders and legal residents.

Trump is mobilizing poorly trained ICE goons to cities around the country where they are escalating violence, violating constitutional norms, suppressing civil rights, and cracking down on protestors.

There have been multiple incidents where federal agents violently arrested elected officials for speaking out during press conferences for DHS.

ICE agents even detained migrants waiting in line at their citizenship ceremony, some who had been working towards their citizenship for decades.

Trump supporters continue to insist that anyone who criticizes these clearly unlawful actions must be a criminal sympathizer.

And if you are a judge or legal authority who has the gall to challenge the unconstitutionality of Trump’s actions, you will be intimidated and removed from power, but not before facing violent threats from MAGA yahoos and perhaps the president himself.

    **Trump’s unlawful „mass deportation agenda**

Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of immigration and ICE’s tactics.

Trump’s „mass deportation“ efforts have done nothing to address the root causes of the „immigration crisis;“ including long standing issues related to incompetent border agents, poorly trained ICE officers, a bloated bureaucracy, a dysfunctional immigration court system, judge and staffing shortages, a broken asylum seeking process, diplomatic barriers with other countries, and among other things, the economic costs associated with his policies.

The Trump administration has been reducing the number of immigration judges/attorneys while pressuring others to deny migrants their citizenship and dismiss their cases when they show up to their court hearings, only to have ICE agents waiting for them outside of court to detain and deport them.

Immigration agents are refusing to comply with court orders to release wrongly detained migrants who end up sitting in jail, sometimes for indefinite periods of time while a judge has already ordered their release.

In some cases, these detainees are transferred to other jails or remote detention centers across the country where they have no access to a lawyer, and places where they are forced to endure inhumane living conditions, not even aware that they’ve been granted release!

Meanwhile, these judges and DOJ/DHS lawyers are being swamped with so many cases that they cannot carry out their duties effectively.

It’s gotten so out of hand that DHS attorneys are making headlines.

You might remember Julie Le, who was an ICE attorney who volunteered to work in Minnesota back in January. Records show that she was given 88 cases to work in less than a month.

During one profile hearing, she told the judge:

    > „Sometimes I wish you would just hold me in contempt, Your Honor, so that I can have a full 24 hours of sleep. I work days and nights just because people are still in there… The system sucks. This job sucks. And I am trying every breath that I have so that I can get you what you need.“

This was in response to the judge demanding to know why ICE agents weren’t complying with court orders to release these detainees.

    Le also stated:

    > „It takes 10 emails to get a release condition to be corrected. It takes two escalations and a threat that I will walk out for that to be corrected.“

She also admitted that she was about to resign before realizing that she was one of few attorneys working for DHS who were trying to prevent people from remaining detained even after a judge had ordered their release.

Le was abruptly fired after making her remarks in court. I guess she got the sleep she wanted.

One major problem with our immigration system has been a lack of judges, attorneys and other staff involved in court cases, interviewing migrants and guiding them through the legal system.

A problem that has only gotten worse because Trump is choosing NOT to address these systemic issues.

Instead, him and his allies who are running immigration enforcement and overseeing the immigration courts have focused almost all of their energy on Trump’s „mass deportations“ and meeting excessive quotas so the White House can brag about numbers rather than fix the inherent problems within our immigration system.

Seems fair to me. The nation has been traumatized but the people who have been terrorized deserve some compensation

  31. sloowshooter on

    Lifelong Dem here.

The only reparations that anyone deserves, is seeing MAGA exorcised from all positions of state and federal power.

The other issue is that the instant that you start forking money over to people who have been hurt by the state, the state takes that as a green flag to continue hurting people. Because reparations cause no pain to the politicians doing wrong, as it’s the taxpayers that foot the bill.

Strip them of power, and they’ll shriek like you are sawing off their right leg with a rusty bread knife.

  32. Or, or focus on the main issues, living affordability, childcare costs, education, healthcare, etc. and take back all three branches of government and then put the MAGA regime on trial for their crimes.
