      1. Why these companies, which presumably sell the same models in other countries like Canada, would just drop security updates for all of them
      2. What mechanism the FCC has to stop these companies from releasing security updates as implied by the article.

      Buy OpenWRT compatible devices. Or even some old Ubiquiti stuff. If you’re snazzy, pick up old Cisco equipment from state auctions. Sure, they’re probably vulnerable to government intrusion but what tech isn’t at this point..

      Eh. I can’t really agree there based on the reasoning. Buy a wifi 7 router if it’s in your price range and comes with the features you want. Basic dual band wifi 7 routers are around $100 and tri-band mesh systems are considerably faster than wifi 6 or 6e equivalents. If the extension isn’t lifted then you’re not getting firmware updates on either and if it is that old router is getting EOL’d sooner and eventually won’t receive anymore updates anyway.

      If I actually had any wifi 7 clients then I wouldn’t hold off. 6e mesh systems aren’t really getting any cheaper, they’re just being discontinued for the new wifi 7 models.

      Can someone help, because I’m confused by this:

      “The sweeping order applies to any router in which any stage of “manufacturing, assembly, design and development” occurs outside the US — in other words, just about any router you can buy right now. The FCC order says that foreign-made routers pose „unacceptable risks“ to national security. The ironic side effect is: It could stop your current router from receiving vital security updates.

      The ban doesn’t apply to routers that were already authorized by the FCC — that is, every router that’s currently for sale in the US — and will only impact new models that haven’t been approved yet.”

      The first paragraph says it applies to just about every router you can buy now, and the next paragraph says it doesn’t apply to any router for sale today. Am I missing something, or can someone help clarify?

      Their goal is to force ISPs into raising prices, except for starlink of course, so that starlink becomes then only economically viable option for most people.

      Or, buy a netgate(pfsense) router and an ap. Then never worry about this again.

      Worst cast scenario, I get updates on my router until March 1, 2027. At that point I won’t allow any additional updates because they will contain US spyware.
