Question period doesnt exactly tend to be a productive time. Based on the way parties have been dealing with eachother lately, I get the impression Carneys presence isnt exactly necessary. Seems a lot more to me that the door is open for party leaders to discuss things with him in a serious manner and hes been keeping them relatively satiated so far.

    This is correct.

Were 4 days of QP last week, he went to 1, despite being in Ottawa all those days.

Whether partisans want to battle on this he clearly doesnt think its worth his time.

Have also noticed Pierre doesnt get his clips like he did before.

And that’s fine. He has a cabinet, with ministers responsible for their portfolios, a House Leader and other seniors members that he can entrust to reply. It’s not a one-man show.

  4. I just struggle to believe you Carney fans would be singing the same tune if a hypothetical PP PM (god help us) was skipping Question Period.

I had a sliver of hope that because of his Anglophilia, Carney was going to take a leaf out of how British PMQ’s is done and maybe pull a David Cameron where where he actually attempts to directly answer questions. Alas, it seems he caught onto the Canadian tradition that „it’s ‚question‘ not ‚answer‘ period lol

  6. I get both sides here. In Carney’s case however, from a political standpoint and public perception, he absolutely doesn’t look like he’s shirking his responsibilities. The international travel is playing as productive and well worth his time. So if he isn’t attending QP as much as maybe he should, I don’t think that’s costing him anything politically for now at least. He is perceived to extremely serious about his job and performing it very well. When the non-politically-engaged Canadian occasionally sees clips from QP (which is honestly rare) it looks like a silly circus anyway, so I bet a lot of Canadians would be just fine with him skipping it

  7. The conservatives have made such a mockery of question period over the last few years that it has really become pointless.

QP is just full of quick smartass gotcha moments that get 15 seconds clips on the news. I get more laughs than information from it and I think Carney has more important things to do than that.

Personally have never thought in the history of ever, question period was relevant or necessary. Once the parties whipped votes, it just became sound bytes for politicians to often mislead their audiences.

There is no individualism, there is no ability to formulate opinion. It’s simply shouting into the void on the either side. Half the time, I have to ask why ask such a nonsensical question when you finished it with the only answer you would ever accept as the truth.

We could stop the whole waste of time and be further along because of it.

  10. I mean, yeah. QP is just theatre. It’s the same questions asked over and over, and of the questions asked, most of them were made clearly to stir up the base with social media video clips.

  11. As it should be – it has devolved into a bunch of grandstanding and political theatrics, thus it should be treated with the importance it deserves.

I’m sure the PM has better things to do that take part in near-useless political theatre. If it was about serious questions and honest attempts to get to the bottom of issues, then it would merit participation.

Yeah, and I don’t care honestly. Dumb gotcha questions answered by talking points. It isn’t accountability, either from the opposition or the government.
