hallo zusammen!

Bollywood films and music were deemed to have no significant meaning and thus allowed to be broadcast within the USSR. Older generations are more familiar with Indian film and music than younger generations who have access to global music.
Easier to remember than Mithun Chakraborty. Disco dancer was way more popular (and fun) than Awaara. That one was really depressing
Soviet cinema landscape was very political. America was bad, so American films were rarely shown, with some weird exceptions. UK was bad so British films were not shown. Indira Gandhi was an ally so Indian films were everywhere. French were anti-American at one time so French films were moderately OK. Thus Soviet-born GenX grew up with Indian and French films and Raj Kapoor was big at the time. You’ll see the same not just in Georgia but also in Russia, Baltic states etc. And starting from 90ies Hollywood came in and Indian films disappeared so more recent actors are virtually unknown.
