This guy is an actual narcissist.

No one gives a fuck about his feelings.

    2. soton_indies on

Does he actually want sympathy? Everybody including him knew Mandelson was a crook. It was public knowledge. Starmer got it wrong but Labour MPs can’t get their act together and remove him. How can Labour be any more useless?

    3. Jaded_Strain_3753 on

We all know that if Johnson or Sunak had done something similar Starmer would have immediately called for their resignation. All politicians are hypocrites I guess but he could at least drop the self righteous act

    4. Any_Association405 on

Mandelson has a lot to answer for, his toxic influence on the Labour Party aided and abetted Tory election victories when Corbyn was leader and ultimately ensured Labour were just a Tory lite “party of Government not protest”
      Loathsome individuals indeed

    5. Gold_Motor_6985 on

Starmer probably went with this despite everything because he knew Mandelson would get him favours with Trump. Being nonce-buddies and all.

But that’s also the main problem I have with Starmer. All his decisions are purely technocratic, like „what’s gonna give us the best outcome over the next 5 years“. But that’s not what we often want from a politician. Sometimes, it’s nice to have a politician willing to take a principled stance even if it’s going to harm us slightly in the short term.

    6. LuckySmudge on

He actually did? I mean, people would pay good money to see that… 😉

    7. Acceptable-Gur-5351 on

So he should do. But also I’m not a head of state – it’s not a job of easy clean decisions.

I don’t sympathise, he knows what his job is, but I do on some level understand why he hired a nonce whisperer to manage a dangerous nonce.

    8. Starmer should stop beating himself up, and hire me to do it for him. I’ll accept minimum wage for this one.

    9. I respect it tbh, haven’t had a prime minister with any accountability in a long time.

    10. MrSierra125 on

He should double down on it. “I chose him knowing he was neck deep in the Epstein scandal, so I sent him to trump, who is in way way deeper than neck deep, odd yellow tuft of hair deep, and knew Mandelson could give us leverage over trump”.

That’s about the only way he can get out of this scandal.

    11. Thandoscovia on

He didn’t care enough to even speak to Lord Mandelson before the appointment, but now he’s beating himself up over it? Why?

    12. qwerty_1965 on

Fucking idiot of a PM. No he’s not as bad the increasingly terrible Tory line of failed leadership was but he sure lacks nouce/instincts for such a job.

    13. ProcedureGloomy6323 on

Meanwhile the sweetheart deal that Mandelson got for Palantir is alive and well.

    14. Mandelson got the job, because Starmers wife convinced him…. Why don’t people see the connection

    15. AdolsLostSword on

Mandelson has been involved in various scandals going back decades. It’s not like Starmer could pretend he was appointing someone he thought was upstanding.

    16. If you beat yourself up over Mandelson, then where are the black eyes?

You don’t get sympathy for being caught, especially when it was this obvious that it was going to blow up

    17. Emotional-Ebb8321 on

You beat yourself up? And yet… you did it anyway. Can’t have been that difficult for your morals then.

    18. Oh no! Poor Keir was tricked by Mandelson and now he feels all sad about it.

We should give him a break, the poor man.

    19. You beat us up by remaining in office when you are unable or unwilling to solve immigration and unemployed Britons while allowing companies to onshore individuals given roles in offshore action. Stop companies bringing people onshore while firing UK citizens, stop revolving three month roundabout of offshore onshore foreign resources. Make companies hire UK citizens, pay their share of tax and you fund education of UK citizens properly. You are worse than the tories. Your wife get any new clothes from her ‘friend’ lately?

    20. Busy_Pudding8452 on

Listen to your gut and don’t make the same mistake with pressure from the orange man

    21. Spamgrenade on

Still a good call from Starmer IMO. Mandelson was exactly the type of snake you would want crawling around Trump and the possibility that Mandelson had dirt on Trump was a big plus.

It was well known by journalists that Mandelson was hanging around in Epstein’s circles way before his appointment. Those hypocritical bastards are only „exposing“ Epstein’s clients when they absolutely have to because their billionaire owners are neck deep in it as well.

I mean there’s enough info in those files to write a novel on some really well known people, more than enough material for a well researched documentary. There’s limitless public interest and its highly unlikely that anyone mentioned is going to take it to court. Yet I hear more about Starmers screw up, which is literally second hand stuff than anything else.

    22. He was warned there was a political risk, and he appointed Mandelson anyway. He has to accept the fallout.

Still, I think Starmer is doing a decent job in a time of economic difficulty. I voted for him the last election, and if there was an election tomorrow, I’d vote for him again.

    23. Relevant_Cause_4755 on

If only the UK had some sort of security service he could have checked in with first, like that one in the James Bond films.

    24. GhostRiders on

Oh fuck off this this bullshit.

Everybody and his dog knows why you appointed him as US Ambassador and his long and sordid history.

Just admit that you appointed him because he is a crooked lying slimy little shit and so is Mandelson.

He was the perfect person to deal with Trump.

You are only sorry because you lost control of the story

    25. Own_Character8049 on

Hypocrite politician being hypocritical, colour me surprised. Would’ve been interesting if he would’ve been as contrite if the messages that was on Mcsweeny’s phone regarding the Mandleson appointment, that had mysteriously been stolen, come to light.

    26. Throwitaway701 on

Starmer seems to think taking responsibility means nothing more than words. For him anyway, he’s happy to fire anyone else

    27. Zealousideal_Fold_60 on

He protests too much.. plus there will be phone messages which will come out one day and he may have no one left to blame

    28. InsideBoris on

Probably stop mentioning it. If you feel that bad quit. If your not going to quit over it shut up about it and get on with running the country.

    29. Speak_To_Wuk_Lamat on

But you will still have Trump make state visits. I dont think you are beating yourself nearly hard enough.

    30. LudicrousPlatypus on

He picked Mandelson knowing full well that he was an Epstein affiliate in the hopes that it would endear him to Trump. Not only did it not make much of a difference, he is now having to face the domestic consequences of nonce enablement.
