We really need to not reward this kind of behavior by developers.

warhorse is gonna have some explaining to do and they better do it quickly. Hoping this story is just a disgruntled former employee because I feel like warhorse would be better than stooping to that, but I guess you never know.

I’ve created an online platform that doesn’t make much money and it’s just me and my associate (non-tech) running it. There’s not a single line of code that was vibecoded in it, but I do use AI to generate translations for the UI. So I can see its use in some cases.
With this said, I would absolutely never use AI for translating anything above a functional level.
A game where the narrative truly matters? Get a fucking professional who knows the ins and outs of the language and who can use proper context and finer details.

I’m not suprised. kcd1 still has bugs in it that softlock the game THAT IT LAUNCHED WITH. shitty company that doesnt gaf about its users. worst rpg ive ever played. multiple softlocking bugs, zero challenge to combat, just mindless slop; now ai slop.

I know global b2c service companies that utilize llms for draft round translation because it’s massively cheaper to pay per read and correction rather than raw translation.
For that you don’t need a dedicated language-to-language expert in _staff_. It’s just not such a type of business.

Stuff like this brings up a really interesting discussion imo. Games need to get cheaper to make, but gamers don’t want labor to be reduced. I’m not sure what the answer is but at some point there will have to be an acceptance of *some* jobs being automated in favour of games being able to exist, especially as scopes continue to grow

Considering that KCD is supposed to be a game series about historically accurate *everything*, it feels a bit lackluster for the devs to not give a shit about translations.
Really makes me wonder if the story about the studio being history nerds was true or just a PR stunt.

One of the best things to happen to gaming in the past 20 years is improved localisation. This is such a backwards step!

This went from my patientgamer wishlist to now no interest at all. I don’t *need* to buy every game out there. So I’m not supporting companies that use AI to eliminate jobs when this economy is fucked. The CEO can have one less yacht instead of fucking over these people’s livelihoods.

No matter how high and mighty redditors will get about AI this will be the norm for most game devs going forward.

The company I work for has a dedicated professional translation team. We submit an intake and it usually takes them 1-2 to translate a dashboard or larger deck. Then we usually send it back for corrections at least once and wait a few more days.
AI does a much better and more efficient job than them, but we still have to use them to get an official sign-off. So, I now send them a regular and translated version and simply ask them to verify it. I get it back within 48h and I don’t think they’ve ever so much as made a suggested correction.
I know Reddit hates even the mention of AI but for a video game (especially one like this), this is good business decision.

I get why people are angry but this is just how technology evolves and shapes our world lol people complain that the AI will mistakes. Well yeahz they’ll probably use it to get the translations 70-80% there then hire another translator to finish up any mistakes. Will cost less overall I’m assuming. It is what it is.

They avoided paying the salary of 1 person, they’ll loose much more than that when trying to sell their game (sure, plenty of people will buy it anyway, but a non-negligible amount of people will boycott based on what they know)

Coming up with little ideas to counter this is kinda pointless. The other side just counters with their own. We already shot ourselves the moment we let companies be legal persons. It’s only going to go into that realm of making your bot a.i. considered a person.
We already sold out decades ago when most countries made so many safety regulations to the point where we all decided slave labor is fine as long as we don’t see it and moved all manufacturing jobs to China.
Sadly humanity kinda just blows at the end of the day.

This sounds absolutely crazy to me. A translator is probably the highest value for money for a game studio. Very limited team size for a huge quality increase. It’s stupid to switch to AI before it’s mature enough to properly translate all nuances of speech.
