    There are 16 such countries:
Australia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Kazakhstan, The U.K, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Germany and Russia would both make sense since they are federal republics

Reminds me of how infuriating it is that Google doesn’t show the names of any smaller towns or villages in Thailand and just show the province no matter the zoom and just show like the names of neighbourhoods

What? Like do they have States or Provinces? UAE should be green then?

  5. You have to zoom in really close to the border to read the subdivision name on these grey countries

  6. Always found it weirdly arbritary which are shown and which aren’t.

To give two examples. Germany is also a federation like the US, but it doesn’t have its states shown. While Spain went through a similar process of devolution as the UK (and actually far more extensive), but its ahtonomies are not shown the same way UK countries are.

  7. I’m Argentine, and I hadn’t noticed that detail because I’d never paid attention to it, and I also took it for granted that all countries had it too.

    Double surprise.

Huh, I never thought that would be the case for Spain. But it is, I just double checked.

Surprised that Google Maps doesn’t do that for Germany, Spain or Russia
