I never look at the country of origin on my products.
I don’t have the time or patience for that

It was always just a PR stunt for them. I’m still buying canadian first, rest of the world second, american last.

They weren’t being sloppy. They were threading the needle. If a private label is owned and developed out of a Canadian head office, that can be enough to tick the regulatory box, even when the ingredients, production, and packaging all happen offshore. It’s a classic case of leaning hard on a technicality while knowing full well how it reads to shoppers.

Guess I’m not buying from Sobeys.

Can’t get fined if you don’t claim a product is Canadian, but isn’t.

For all the (deserved) hate to Loblaws, Superstore has always been much better at providing + promoting Canadian products than Sobeys has been.

Huh…I have to drive past a Costco and small indi shop if I want to get to a Sobey’s.
Wonder where I should stop this weekend.

If you ask Google, it lists some ways to tell – Dealer Owner stickers on the doors, information posters on the business (like how long they’ve been operating), the name of the company that owns the store is often included on exterior signage. I work in one.
