The one that most surprised me is still New Zealand. I mean, their largest city is named for the guy who marched 20,000 into Afghanistan, with only 1 returning. It wasn’t named because of Auckland’s folly, but seeing the name on the news daily would always trigger the knowledge.

  2. Ask an Aussie why they sent troops to die in Afghanistan for a beef between nations halfway across the world and they’ll say “our freedoms”. When were Australia’s freedoms threatened and when did the US mobilise resources to help save Australia from perceived threats?

Wild how after 20 years, control was returned to the TB. The only way to actually win would’ve been to flood the area with Chinese immigrants and integrate the local Afghans into Chinese society.

I say China here since Afghanistan shares a border with China, and China is secular / technologically advanced so it would’ve been able to keep the area under control.

It sounds ridiculous, but it would have worked.
