Die Verteidigungsforderungen der USA machen Europa weniger gefügig

Submission Statement: For decades, the US urged Europe to spend more on defense. Europe largely ignored the call. Russia’s four-year war on NATO’s eastern flank and an assertive Trump administration have changed that calculus in ways that may now unsettle Washington itself. 

Germany is now the world’s fourth-largest military spender. France and the UK have established formal nuclear coordination. Defense manufacturing is expanding at three times the 2020 pace. 

Natalia Hidalgo Martinez warns the US has not reckoned with what a more capable Europe means. A stronger Europe will develop security interests of its own. Washington may not like what that looks like in practice. 

Thanks to president Trump’s prodigious foriegn policy, the EU is finally taking their defense spending seriously. As an American taxpayer I couldn’t be happier.
