Thank god. Maybe now we can kick out all the criminals who claimed asylum and all the international students who claimed asylum after they couldn’t renew their visa.
If its a legit refuge claim then I support it
If it was loophole, criminal, or just trying to abuse our system – then get them out.
If I woke up from a year long coma and read this bill then I’d be convinced that Poilievre was prime minister.
> “Cancellation of documents sounds innocuous, but it could go as far as cancelling large groups of permanent resident cards, or large groups of visas, or work permits,” said Kyle Hyndman, a former chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s immigration law division.
> “This government has given itself quite a bit of power to make changes to the immigration system,” he said, “and to do things that could be arbitrary, protecting them from scrutiny.”
My favourite part about these significant changes that the Liberals made here and in Bill C5 is that they provide such unnecessarily far reaching and broad power to the government that it relies entirely on the Tories never winning another election again or you risk some seriously troubling abuse (but who knows, maybe the Liberals will beat them to it).
I think the headline should read „has the potential to cancel…“
There’s no guarantees that the ministry will cancel refugee claims retroactively, but the law will give them the power to do so. Hopefully they use it for those insances where cancelled student visas suddenly applied for refugee status.
I love how we can dole out retroactive punishment to immigrants going through the legal process to immigrate to Canada, but it’s impossible to clawback a fraudulent scheme that gave away a 3rd of Vancouver island to the railway and then forestry companies.
