  1. State universities almost universally use the „distribution“ model. You are required to take a social science, but you are never forced to take sociology specifically. The most commonly taken social sciences are psychology, civics and macroeconomics. Sociology is the 4th most popular elective in social sciences.

Looks like book banning wasn’t enough for their politicos to prove how „far right“ they are.

Guarantee if you look at the politico’s children’s college classes you’ll find they’re taking the very sociology their parents just banned. Why? Because they go to school out of state so they can receive a better education.

As usual it’s „rules for thee but not me“

  3. Florida universities are going to lose accreditation at this rate.

First, they butt in to basically remove any worth from the subject. „Rodrigues pointed to professors who have called the materials an “affront to academic freedom” and “subpar” for limiting how courses address race, gender and sexuality.“

How can you study human society without talking about race, gender and sexuality?

You can’t. Not if you actually want to learn anything worth a damn.

Knowing that, and how the professors reacted, they just forced these courses out of general education.

The idiots who think this is indoctrination into wokeness, should ask themselves why learning about race, gender, and sexuality in relation to modern American society makes kids ‚woke.‘ It is less indoctrination than understanding and empathy.

  4. Time to stop recognizing Florida university degrees. They reach no standard of a civilized society

Sociology is just ‚thinking too hard about why things are broken‘ and florida definitely doesn’t want anyone doing that right now. can’t have students accidentally learning how systemic issues work when you’re busy pretending they don’t exist. next week they’ll probably replace history with ‚patriotic storytelling‘ and math with ‚counting your blessings‘.

We’re speedrunning *fahrenheit 451* at this point. banning the study of how society functions while living in a collapsing society is peak irony. it’s like a mechanic banning the manual because he doesn’t want anyone to know why the engine is on fire. florida is becoming a giant social experiment in ‚willful ignorance‘ and the results are looking pretty bleak.

Because they don’t want the public to know that what they’re doing is wrong in Florida.

  8. Kids that study in Florida colleges will be very confused when they go to other countries and states. Crazy times we live in.

I bet my life savings ,going off of JUST the headline , that they are doing this because Marx is an early figure in sociology.

  10. I still remember when DeSantis touted this as the “Free State of Florida.”

  11. Well this is one way to ruin your universities. No one is going to go to unaccredited schools.

No surprise here, the state that wouldn’t make it illegal to marry your own first cousin bans something educational.

So what the fuck are they even teaching in Florida curriculum? Crocodile wrestling?

If they keep going other States are just going to refuse to take people that are coming from Florida.

They can live in stupid land by themselves.

  15. Florida continues its use of the political leucotome and isn’t finding much brain matter left to swirl

i will say sociology class helped make me the democrat i am today.

i guess if all this information was silenced when i was young and developing maybe i wouldnt be such a leftist now

I was just talking about how I didn’t understand how people could attend university and remain socially conservative because any class that teaches about society is going to have to admit plain boring data shows correlations between things like being a woman and poverty, or things like uneven policing of different communities (therefore higher crime rates). Or that funding different social welfare programs can work to decrease crime, increase future earnings/education, etc. which benefits all of society, not just clients of these programs.

I guess they knew this too so they just stopped allowing it to be taught

As stupid as our society is these days, I’d be willing to bet that it’s banned because “sociology” sounds like “socialism”.

  19. ClimateSociologist on

One of my sociology professors described the field as „the study of how society works and who it works for.“

They should tell you all you need to know about why they banned it.

As an alternative high school sociology teacher, you have no idea how many kids thought they hated school and learning until they take a sociology class. The topics are SO relevant to their life and the learning in it so tangible, it can sometimes catapult a kid to entirely new learning and careers.

Teaching kids about the Stanford Prison Experiment (and yes how it’s a bad experiment with horrible scientific methods and stuff) makes a lot of kids sit up and interact for the first time.

    Such a shame.

  21. If Republicans don’t want people to have something- be it information, a means of conveniently voting – it’s probably worth seeking out and fighting for.

  22. SOC 100 was one of the most interesting discussion classes I had. What a bunch of fucking goofs.

Pinochet and the military dictatorship… in fact all military dictatorships in South America in the 1970s, identified the intellectual and, in particular, sociologists as communists and enemies of the state.

‘We’d rather it remain a mystery why a significant portion of our society has become such raving lunatics.’

  25. One of the areas of study in sociology is how society is manipulated. Can’t have the victims recognizing that they are victims.

My girlfriend was a Sociology professor for some time, but has since moved on to a different career.

Just last year, one of her students from decades ago reached out to thank her for the course she taught and said how much it affected his life.

    Social sciences are valuable, y’all.
