Don’t think I’ve ever seen a red squirrel in London (born 89)

Good to see the Isle of Whtie keeping their reds

Natural selection before your eyes. Red squirrels are going extinct in the British isles, giving way to the gray squirrels.

    Why?

Red squirrels hide their nuts in one place, in one giant pile.

Gray squirrels hide their nuts all over the place.

When a gray squirrel finds a red squirrels stash, they steal their nuts and that red squirrel has to start over and build a new stash, in a new location, or starve over winter.

When a red squirrel finds a gray squirrel stash, they only find one nut.

Therefore, the more competitive trait is to hide the nuts everywhere (and steal the squirrels nuts who hide them in one place), leaving the red squirrels in the lurch and gray squirrels thriving.

Well looks like another example of the Irish doing a better job in the last 15 years.

  4. How did Ireland manage to basically nearly get rid of the invasive species?

  5. Have never seen a red squirrel in person. Just those grey fuckers everywhere

I live in an area marked on the map as having none in Ireland but I saw my first one ever in a small old hazel woodland for the first time last year

  7. What’s the story behind grey squirrels in Ireland starting from the middle of the island?

Why were there no squirrels in east Yorkshire? Hull isn’t *that* bad…

  9. Is the lack of further reduction in the Red Squirrels range the result of a niche partition?

  10. Rurrrh! Bloody foreign squirrels, coming over ‚ere stealing the jobs of hardworking British squirrels!

IIRC, the greys were introduced into Ireland by some moron who brought a breeding pair to another moron as a present, and they allowed the breeding pair to escape
