SS: Three senior Israeli officials described three functionally different operations in southern Lebanon within one week. Defence Minister Katz ordered IDF control „up to the Litani“ and blocked civilian return. Netanyahu framed an open-ended security zone. Finance Minister Smotrich called the Litani „the new Israeli border.“ The IDF’s own evacuation orders already extend north of the Zahrani River, beyond the Litani itself.

The piece sources Katz’s 24 March statement, Netanyahu via Haaretz (25 Mar), Smotrich via Al Jazeera (23 Mar), CTP-ISW’s 25 March Iran Update (79 Hezbollah attacks in 24 hours, evacuation order geography), and applies Hague Regulations Art. 42 to the question of whether the legal designation matters when effective military control is established regardless of what the controlling party calls it.

The analytical value is in the gap between the three positions, not which one is „right,“ but what the divergence tells us about where this is heading. Israel held a similar zone from 1985 to 2000. It was called temporary for all eighteen years.

Good. The Lebanon central government is welcome to lift a single little baby finger to establish authority over their own country and say no to violent terrorist Hezbollah waging (*initiating)* wars on their behalf. Otherwise, Israel is going to do what every other sane country on the planet would do – protect its people. It’s pulled out of Lebanon 3 times so far, *of its own volition, from a position of power,* in the name of peace. And every time, Extremist factions in lebanon have broken Their side of ceasefire agreements, Their side of UN agreements, initiating rocket barrages by the hundreds and thousands upon civilians. No shit Israel wants control to the Litani – it is the rationale, sane, correct, moral thing to do to protect civilian life. And if Lebanon and the other Arab states ever grow a pair to actually handle extremists, rather than just quietly smile that Israel does their dirty work for them (while publically condemning them to make their constituents happy), then something better will come. It’s amazing that when a country stops basing its entire identity on or hosting entities that base their identities on exterminating Jews and Israel as a whole, magically – Magically! – there is complete and total peace with Israel. Egypt and Jordan? Peace, no rockets, no border incursions, for decades and decades and decades. And all they had to do was stop defining their life purpose as exterminating Israelis. Not that complex.
