I don’t agree with the CPC on a lot of things, but they’re absolutely right about the Longest Ballot Committee being a menace to the electoral process. Hopefully something can be done to stop them while still making it easy for sincere independent candidates to run.
Ok so can someone finally admit that the Longest Ballot Committee is doing this for the gain of the Liberals? And do something about it?
The simplest amendment to curb abuse, without dampening grassroots politics, would be to change the rules to only permit an individual to nominate a single candidate. The current rules that allow one person to nominate hundreds of cabinet is a goofy abuse of the system.
Given that the LBC is currently running a large number of candidates, each of who has a unique official agent, I think the idea that preventing people from signing the nomination paperwork for more than one candidate, won’t stop them either. I’m also not sure how that would work in practice.
If two candidates file their papers at about the same time on the same day, and while going over the signatures, duplicates are found, what’s the outcome? Does Elections Canada have to pick between the two of them? Do they erase both signatures? More importantly, how do you justify telling someone that they’re not allowed to endorse multiple candidates?
Sure, we only vote for one, but that’s when we make a decision. The campaign is all about learning who’s the best, and forcible limits on who can present their case, just strikes me as being wrong.
