      This feels like one of those early warning signs before a bigger wave.

      President Donald Trump suffered a humiliating wakeup call on Tuesday when a Democratic candidate won the election for the Florida House district that includes Mar-a-Lago.

      Democrat Emily Gregory won the State House 87 seat in a special election against Republican Jon Maples.

      The South Florida district includes parts of West Palm Beach, including Trump’s private club where he continues to spend many of his weekends.

      Today, Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Florida held several key special and municipal elections. The most significant news of the night is a „blue wave“ in the state legislature, with Democrats flipping two key seats in districts previously held by Republicans.

      State Legislative Special Elections

      House District 87 (Palm Beach County)
      In a major upset, Democrat Emily Gregory defeated Republican Jon Maples. This race drew national attention because the district includes Mar-a-Lago, the residence of President Donald Trump.

      Result: Gregory won by approximately 2.4 percentage points (a margin of 797 votes).

      Context: This seat was previously held by Republican Mike Caruso, who won it by 19 points in 2024. Trump had endorsed Maples in this contest.

      Senate District 14 (Hillsborough County)

      Democrat Brian Nathan, a Navy veteran and union organizer, narrowly defeated Republican State Representative Josie Tomkow to flip this seat.

      Result: Nathan won by just 408 votes (50.25% to 49.75%).

      Recount Watch: Under Florida law, a machine recount is triggered if the margin is 0.5% or less. While Nathan is currently just outside that margin, final vote-by-mail tallies could still trigger a recount.

      Context: The seat was vacated by Jay Collins, who was appointed Lieutenant Governor by Governor Ron DeSantis last summer.
