    1. From the article:

In a shocking move, the Federal Communications Commission just banned the sale of any new Wi-Fi routers that are not US-made, citing national security.

Late on Monday afternoon, the FCC announced the order, based on a White House determination that foreign-made routers introduce “supply chain vulnerabilities” that hackers and cyberspies can exploit. Specifically, the commission updated its “covered list,” which acts as a blacklist of telecom equipment deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to US national security. It now includes “all consumer-grade routers produced in foreign countries.”

    2. I say good luck finding chips for networking made outside of the US. Or maybe they will be OK if the cover says “made in the USA” even though the innards are from Taiwan.

      Gas prices up.
      Ram and memory prices up.
      Video card prices up.
      Food prices up.
      Car prices up.
      Now inevitably router prices up.

      Everything’s so expensive

    4. In other words, us routers are gonna start having spyware and backdoors, etc.

Keep what you have running well and tell them to eat shit.

How long untill the US economy just… implodes? Every price is raising, stuff is getting into unobtainium territory and they are banning things or tarrifing them out of the market.

I doubt their economy can hold this forever o.o…

Which company even builds those APs in the states? AFAIK, most NICs and wireless ICs are fabbed abroad – China, TSMC – and assembled in often eastern countries.

    6. Which sounds like the sale of routers has been banned. Do they even make them here? Is being spied on by the Chinese worse than being spied on by Trump Scum?

    7. prince-pauper on

But they’re fine with all the Chinese made cellphones and computers and cameras an microphones and social media apps and and and and

      Fucking delusional.

This is what you do if you want to control the internet. ‚Approved‘ routers will have to have back doors so they can watch what you do or even totally shut it down.

    9. From the article:

      > However, the FCC says router makers can secure an exemption from the Pentagon or the Department of Homeland Security.

Interestingly enough, [Starlink was issued an exemption from this ban.](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c74787w149zo)

So basically, kiss the ring and send money to Trump or you won’t be able to sell routers in the US.

I’m thinking nobody asked my ISP provider (or anyone else’s) about this hot mess.

So new US made versions will have domestic spying built in, rather than foreign spying

    12. It’s hard to tell between an actual reasonable measure against a threat and political bullshit.

Interesting because Space X/ Star Link is the only company that makes routers in the United States. Giving Elon Musk another monopoly

Except for business… You know, the entities that would *actually* be targeted by security flaws or backdoors and *actually* have viable information or real reasons to hack or steal from.

So, screw the consumers because… Just screw the consumers I guess.

Also, the notable exception is Elon Musk’s Starlink, because of course it is.

Get ready for router prices to double. Only one manufacturer in the United States at the moment for Consumer level routers.

    16. What a fucking joke. But all the cellphones and computers and EVERYTHING else made abroad is fine but this logic? Honestly just dumb.

    17. DustinBrungart on

These chuckle fucks just spend all day doing the dumbest things imaginable and then slap on “citing national security.”

Ok which router should I go buy then before everything sells out and people go crazy?
