I flew potatoes on Expedition 72 for my space garden, an activity I did in my off-duty time. This is an early purple potato, complete with spot of hook Velcro to anchor it in my improvised grow light terrarium.
Potatoes are one of the most efficient plants based on edible nutrition to total plant mass (including roots). Recognized by Andy Weir in his famous book/movie „The Martian,“ potatoes will have a place in future exploration of space. So I thought it good to get started now! I call this one „Spudnik!“
More photos from space can be found on my [twitter](https://x.com/astro_Pettit) and Instagram, astro_pettit
This is quite Marsvellous!
How cool! Which way do the roots grow?
Very cool! I wonder how air potatoes would do compared to regular potatoes.
Well that is a very lovely potato!
I’ve seen this movie before.
That’s an alien egg.
Mark Whatney would be proudÂ
Congrats on the space potato! Â Do you have any way to cook it, or will that be a seed potato for a future experiment?
So how often did you mutter „I’m gonna have to science the shit out of this“?
Every time you checked them or just at the start?
What can someome that hasn’t dedicated their entire life to become an astronaut (which I know is insanely hard and challenging) do to get a shot at going to space or the ISS as a visit?
What happens to the space potatos after you grow them?
Actually relieved it isn’t an egg
Here comes Romulus incident
I wanna taste space radiation mutated potatoes!
I wonder what would happen if you leave them alone for too long.
Is that velcro on the left side of the potato?
Are you growing them without soil?
SPUDNIK!
Thank you for your updates. Always amazing to see your posts!
This looks like what happens in newer Resident Evil games when you pick up and examine items
Nice! So when are you going to grow space peanuts?
Chorus fruits are the same way,
This is how we get the Flood, do you want the Flood?
Are you going to boil them, fry them or put them in a stew?
Po tay toes.
Item pickup in Resident Evil
Boil it, mash it, stick it in a stew…
What makes it purple?
Looks very cool, is it purple on the inside as well?
Protomolecule discovered.
Looks like it would give you the worst superpowers imaginable
Thought I was looking at a Resident Evil item inspection screen. This thing is (literally) out of this world
Did you bring whole potatoes and let sprouts grow from them? How many potatoes did you bring?
When you bring something like this into space that can grow, do you have to get it pre-approved?
Did it grow the velcro too? Space is weird.
I like that you went with one of the more anthocyanic potatoes
you mean on board spudnik……..
It grew Velcro too?! That’s insane!!
Velcro Potato would be a good name for a band.
Love this post u/astro_pettit. Time to make some space fries!
This is so refreshingly cool. Lot of awful shit in the world but goddamn, space potatoes!!
It looks to have healthy sprout development but what is the grayish spotted substance?
Grown with Matt Damon’s feces?
The Spudnik 1 is officially in orbit
How was this grown? Curious as a previous farmer, and current gardener. Seems like something out of The Martian. Haha. Let’s hope you aren’t in those shoes that he was!
The Velcro is pretty funny.
It looks abnormally smooth and perfect, is that an effect of the lack of gravity?
i’ve seen this movie. that’s an egg. this doesn’t end well for the crew. it’s gonna velcro your face.
So weird! What kind of medium do you grow things in up air? Just like hydroponic and velcroed in place?
why its soo smooth and egg shape ?
Even in space, potatoes be like, „WHERE’S THE FUCKING SOIL!“
This pic looks like you are inspecting an item in a bethesda game
„WHERE’S THE FUCKING SOIL“ -potato
