The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is moving the training of servicemen to the territory of Ukraine, taking into account logistical issues, as well as the fact that Western instructors do not have the necessary military experience.
This was stated by Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of Doctrines and Training of the General Staff, Yevhen Mezhevikin, as reported by Militarnyi and LB.ua.
“They are detached from our realities, from current combat operations,” he said.
According to him, some foreign training programs were abandoned because partners “either cannot change their legislation or do not understand certain processes.”
At the same time, Mezhevikin emphasized that Ukrainian instructors also take part in training Ukrainians abroad; they rotate on a regular basis and are selected from those who have “the greatest and most relevant experience.”
In addition, training in Ukraine, he said, simplifies military logistics and the overall time needed for personnel training: “We can respond more quickly to changes in the combat situation at the front and not lose time moving personnel of units from country to country.”
This makes perfect sense.
When the war began Ukraine needed the expertise countries like the UK could provide.
But with the war having progressed it makes sense that Ukraine is now more experienced, more competent and more able to train its own soldiers.
If the Western nations have any sense they’ll be asking the Ukrainians to provide them with the hard fought and hard paid for knowledge they have built up.
*So, marching up and down the square isn’t good enough for you…*
I get a text message several times a year asking me to sign up to train Ukrainian servicemen. Like, dude, I have basic military training from conscription. I can’t teach anything to people who are going to the front of a modern war against a super power.
I heard the Dutch landforce commander say that training is given in modules (first aid, trench warfare, operating in squads, operating in doubles, urban warfare, etc.) And that the Ukrainians simply advise on and select the modules they want to be given to their future troops. He gave the example that the requirements had shifted massively from offensive modules towards static defence modules.
I don’t know what this general staffs experience is of course with all allies, but it sounded to me like were simply executing a training the ukrainian wanted and selected
NATO will need to act fast on this, and modernize their doctrine. We can see on Iran’s case, what happens when countries refuses to adapt to new times, and now the entire persian gulf is in flames, and their aircraft carriers parked far far away.
It’s not that, training in a safe place and using other’s manpower and resources for that would be great for them. Western training would take more time Ukraine doesn’t have, their pipeline is short, but it won’t be bad.
I’ll say the quiet part out loud. It’s desertions. It is easier to desert outside of the country and if the person does – they are pretty much safe from getting sent back, while in Ukraine they can be caught. They don’t want to see France repeating.
I thought training abroad was not because of the experience but the safety and secrecy.
Oh how the turn tables. But no, this is a good thing for Ukraine, and good thing for their allies.
