These don’t do anything but make money off whoever requested them and let everyone know the area is a crime magnet

I had my car broken into and laptop stolen even though these were in the parking lot. The police came only a few mins of waiting (they were close by). Told me there is not much they can do about it and don’t expect to find my stuff. Car will come up as stolen. He said they’ll hit each exit off the nearby highway and ~100 cars. They’ll be gone in 2 mins. Even if they find someone with a stack of laptops, nothing can be done unless at least one serial number shows as stolen. Usually the laptops are on a boat heading out before you can even register them as stolen.

So why are these being installed in generally “safe” areas? I haven’t seen many in high crime areas and I think I know why. It’s easier to control people who are less resistant to authority.

They are good practice for rock throwing.

If they got rid of these things, where would people go to get fuzzy pictures of people in hoodies committing crimes?
They’re documenting crime, not deterring it. The people who commit the crimes know full well that they’re on camera the whole time and they don’t care and do it anyway. Where’s the deterrence?

I got yelled at by one of these when I took my daughter to an empty parking lot to practice driving. Really?!?

The one outside our McDonald’s, near the clinic plays classical music sometimes.

What’s wild is here in Marin County I’m starting to see them disappear. There used to be one for a long time in the Home Depot lot and now it’s gone. They put one up near the Coast Guard base near our home and then removed it entirely. It’s not a foregone conclusion that these need to be allowed anywhere.

Maybe the money could be invested in getting people what they need so they don’t need to steal instead.

Those will be the first to go once we decide it’s time to throw the tea into the ocean.

These cameras give the allusion of safety and crime protection. Just like having a lock on the door to your home.

I hate the fucking blue lights esp when the parking lot is next to a nature preserve

Don’t the workers own the means of production?

Lots of people in the comments making arguments for why we need better surveillance and stricter police enforcement. Imagine license plate reader cameras everywhere so criminals can be tracked from the scene of the crime to home? And then police who are funded and staffed enough to swiftly make arrests, and legal departments staffed enough to swiftly convict.
Alas, we have this halfway situation where nobody is happy

Let’s hear what the impotent folks of „Don’t Thread on Me“ will say about this! I’m sure it will be empowering…. /S

these are also just a massive data broker dragnet. they sell data of who is shopping where, they pretty much identified anyone that comes into the parking lot and their cars.
