  1. While not marked as a proper independent state, this map has the *Reich des Mahdi* to the south of Egypt. And to the south of Mahdi’s domain, there’s the tribe of Nyam-Nyam, which – if you believe Jules Verne – owns their name to the onomatopoeia of munching food, which they would make before battles to let their enemies know they plan to eat them (in Turkish, the word for cannibal, *yamyam*, comes from this).

    If Germany used to have colonies in Afrika, how come they don’t speak German anymore there?

  3. Interesting—this is one of the rare maps where UK territories are colored in shades of yellow (usually associated with Spain) and Germany is in red (usually associated with England). But aside from that, the map looks good and is nicely digitized.
