  1. “The analysis estimates that a substantial share of Canadians who would rank among top earners in Canada have emigrated to the United States—roughly 40 percent of potential top 1 percent earners and 30 to 50 percent of the next nine percentiles.

Canadian-born individuals in the United States are more educated than native-born Americans, earn substantially more, and cluster disproportionately in top income deciles.”

So 40% of our potential highest earners and largest potential tax base are emigrating south. Pretty shocking number and very concerning. Not really surprising though. Canada is basically America’s STEM incubator.

  2. Voters really need to start holding provincial & municipal governments to task for this. The biggest contributors to our productivity and per capita growth slumps are predominantly tied to interprovincial trade barriers and housing which Ottawa historically has exerted minimal control over. We either need Ottawa to beef up transfers to encourage long-term provincial cooperation on those fronts (which is probably the most realistic solution), or hope that provincial governments collectively opt to move in the right direction of their own volition. (which I honestly don’t think they can be expected to do, at least not on both fronts simultaneously)

We’ll see what this looks like in 3-5 years, the US is working hard to give them reasons to return home. It’s a big decision with lots of logistics and can take a while – for our family who fits this description, it will be well over a year between making the decision and actually arriving in Canada. Yes, our disposable income will be a bit lower in Canada, but not enough to cause any noticeable change in standard of living.

  4. Oh thehub quoting globe and mail. Two dirt papers trying to make something out of data that doesn’t make sense. If you want some reading that isn’t right-wing biased so you have a chance at getting real news:

    TLDR:
GDP per capita is not a metric anybody with 2 cents uses for good reason.
