I cancelled Netflix when the whole trump tariff stuff started. It was just the last thing to convince me to cancel as Netflix has gone downhill…

Trump’s war on free trade is why the US is in a recession.

Either pay or be removed from the market. Life will go on and entertainment can be found elsewhere.

There is a very simple solution to all of this… actually many. Just allow all streamers to operate TAX FREE and on the side search pubfilm something something or streamm4u or their derivatives

Who do you think will be paying this? It might look like netflix in the books, but there are subscribers just under that.

I’m annoyed paying taxes on Steam purchases.

Our own Canadian tv providers pay into the same fund, if anything they should be bitching that Netflix etc isn’t paying. Clearly this guys shoes don’t have laces because there’s no way he’s intelligent enough to tie them.

A few clarifications, knowing that bringing facts, history and logic to the discussion guarantees downvotes.
1. One commenter mentioned that „Our own Canadian tv providers pay into the same fund“. Netflix (and other streaming services) are *not* broadcast. They aren’t licenced by the CRTC (the Canadian FCC).
2. The 2023 Online Streaming Act applies the Broadcasting Act to streamers, above certain thresholds that seem aimed at Netflix. It doesn’t apply, due to those thresholds, to any Canadian streamers. It’s a bit like the E.U. DST – aimed squarely at the U.S. giants.
3. Is it fair? Well, not from the U.S. perspective, because it’s taxing *the company*. To make it fair, tax *the consumer directly* and see if they still support it. But it *is* fair in that it applies to *any* streaming giant – except that Canada doesn’t actually have any.
4. Do we actually *need* Netflix? No. Boycott it if you wish. But don’t *ban* it and don’t *special-case* U.S. companies if you don’t want the U.S. to do the same thing back. Which tariffs are. Both are just extra taxes.
5. But this is u/canada. The U.S. is an evil empire trying to assimilate us. Shouldn’t we do this just on principal? Perhaps, but Canada needs the U.S. a lot more than the U.S. needs Canada. This is just another unnecessary provocation added to poke the bear.
Either repeal the 2023 Online Streaming Act *or* remove the thresholds – which would hamper Canadian streamers also – but either way *treat every streaming company equally*. Picking out U.S. companies just extends a losing battle.

This is stupid and is going to fail. This just puts the US streaming services on the same footing as Canadian media companies. We’re not singling the US companies out. We’re simply requiring them to pay into the same funds that Canadians do.

Just cancel Netflix, Prime, etc. and torrent it all. Don’t give them any money.
