When the price to extract crude in the Canadian oilsands and export it overseas isn’t justified by global wars in Europe and Asia cutting off local supplies, we’re likely going to regret this. They’ll just buy the global commodity from closer markets. Additionally, [reports show that ~54% of current fossil fuels demand can already be replaced with electrification (up to ~79%)](https://ember-energy.org/latest-insights/the-energy-security-fall-out-from-fossil-fuel-fragility-to-electric-independence/). In the mid and long term, it’s doubtful that investors choose oil for energy in the first place.

Canadians are also going to be wondering why we built so much export capacity for an energy that is still projected by the IEA to plateau around 2029. I hold major doubts that TMX – and subsequent expansions – will ever end up a financially profitable investment.
