  1. Liberals have been sleeping on this for ages. It’s time to admit we are a natural resource economy, and embrace that.

This is so obvious and has been for the last decade.

The LPC needs to get the fuck out of the way and let us be prosperous once again.

  3. There are some of us on here have been saying this for umm 10 years. Had we completed EE, NG and half the proposed LNG terminals, we would be so much better off than today… What stopped us? LPC, no other barrier.

Better late then never i guess.

Right now we should be arming ourselves.

If we continue to pump oil doesn’t that make us a target of the USA? That’s why they invaded Venezuela right?

  6. But its incredibly short sighted and ham-fisted. Other countries have proven that investment in alternative energy pays off.

Nobody is against making money or increasing export. But rather because doing so simply for short term gains at the expense of the future is counterintuitive.

Why build for more oil capacity when we are trying to reduce?

Why build for more oil capacity when this surge is only temporary?

What were the other excuses for not doing anything?

Did the study mention how much that would increase greenhouse gas emissions?

  9. In theory, I’m all for it.

At the same time, we need to re-evaluate our existing model because Canadians have experienced a consistent rapid decline in quality of living over decades. So we have to be cautious of „privatize the profit“ scenarios. For example, the proposed pipeline between Alberta and BC would likely be 50% First Nations owned, 50% private…

Our natural resources should enrich ALL Canadians.

It would be better if we just refined and used our own oil instead of shipping it anywhere but here to be refined.

Just for additional context, our national nominal GDP is approximately $2.4 trillion USD (Federal Reserve). So this would represent a 1.3% increase annually.

We should be the richest country on earth based on resources alone but that’s been completely prevented for decades due to reckless economic mismanagement. The federal government should completely shutter their assessment agency and leave all approvals to the provinces, except for where it involves interprovincial infrastructure like pipelines – in which case they should work as a mediator to push the project forward.

Watching Liberals have a Meltdown because they been proven wrong again is quite entertaining.

A lot of our problems would be lifted if we leaned into our energy sector.

  16. I really wish we pushed massively into nuclear and green power. If we were funding that push off of oil and natural gas there would be far less opposition due to the size of the country.

Yea! More money today, so we have less tomorrows! Who needs a future, when a few people could get rich?

Boosting Canada’s manufacturing sector could theoretically lift our GDP by billions too. Boosting literally any industry could potentially boost our GDP.

Fossil fuels are inefficient and a highly volatile commodity. Resource extraction generally adds fewer jobs and less GDP output than value added industries like manufacturing.

Also climate change is real and making life more expensive. We don’t need to dig ourselves a deeper hole. We should be trying to be less reliant on a volatile commodity that’s destroying the planet and invest more in renewables. Renewables are already cheaper and countries all over the world are weaning themselves off of fossil fuels in order to be less dependent on imported energy.

We could also increase the royalties we receive per barrel instead if giving it all away to share buybacks and dividends.

  20. Canada is already the 3rd largest crude oil exporter in the world. And excluding countries with sub 10M people, it’s already one of the top per capita exporters of oil. Add other resources like potash, uranium, gold, aluminum, etc and Canada earns a lot of money from its resources compared to other countries.

Clearly, our economic failings are not simply the result of inadequate resource extraction and export.

We’ve lost ground in R&D. We’re losing our best computer scientists and engineers. We let our high tech scene diminish to irrelevance in 20 years. And yet, all we talk about is resource extraction and export.

  21. Yeah sounds like a great idea now when oil prices are sky high. Fast forward 20 years and crunch the numbers.
