As an urban non-driver, I don’t mind paying cash to keep buses running or subsidize the fuel bills and driving of people like farmers who grow our food.

But a lot of driving is a choice and a lot of home location stuff is a choice and vehicle size is often a choice too. A lot of this money will go to people who chose a bigger vehicle than they needed and/or chose to live in sprawly areas that require loads of driving. I don’t feel like paying for them, quite honestly.

Also, Japan needs to get serious about pushing EVs. Very poor record so far.

So many subsidies for fossil fuels. It’s criminal.
This destroys the environment for generations and borrows financially from the next generation pay for it as well.
It would be so much better if we actually paid the full price for a fossil fuels today and used that as an incentive to transition towards renewable solution solutions.

The sun and the wind don’t need to transit through the strait of Hormuz. It would be so much better to use this as an occasion to double our efforts to move away from the fuels that undermine so many wars.

I wish Japan had better and affordable 6-8 seat BEV choices, like most of the developed world already does.

I had to go with a PHEV, which still is great as I barely use gasoline, but I would have preferred to just not depend on any external factors at all.

The reason gas prices are high is because supply has been massively disrupted by the war. When you have limited supply of something the last thing government should be doing is providing subsidies that encourage the consumption of that very thing. Its just idiotic.

I’m happy with the government doing things to help consumers affected by high prices, but subsidies should not be tied to the consumption of a specific product like this.

One might also question why they are willing to guarantee the price of gas, but not of rice – a much more important product for people that has seen a much bigger price increase that has had way more impact on people.
