Should be said that nowadays most of these regions particularly in the west have big Catholic or Protestant minorities, since millions of Protestant/Catholic Germans were deported into these boundaries after WW2.

This just shows how much social conformity influences what religion you are.Where you are born will be the largest factor in determining your religion.

Be aware that this does not show religious majority. Just the majority between catholic and protestant only.
East germany is solidly „no religion“ majority.

All of these maps are technically correct but somewhat misleading. The majority of people in Germany are not religious in any way. We’re one of the least religious countries on earth, people who actually visit their churches regularly are extraordinarily rare
