This is the way.
If you don’t want to be shot for breaking into someone’s home, don’t break into someone’s home.

As it should be, we really should look at countries like the Czech Republic who allow their citizens to use firearms for self-defence.

You can always protect yourself in Canada but it has to be reasonable. Shooting an unarmed suspect when they are standing or running away is not called self defence. So shooting armed suspects is self defence.

Great news. That’s the right way to handle this. Glad nobody is going bankrupt trying to stay out of prison. Castle Doctrine is the absolute minimum, Stand Your Ground is better; and, failing that, there’s always Jury Nullification.

I’m glad the homeowner got off, but we need to change the law so that a homeowner isn’t liable for what happens to a criminal that breaks and enters their home, unarmed or otherwise.
