      Those low numbers from some countries (which military is not involved) got me googling. If anybody is also curious:

      1st of April 2024 in Gaza Strip Israeli rocket hit van of World Central Kitchen killing 4 people. From Poland, Great Britain, Ireland and Australia.

      Interesting cutoff dates. You don’t think the Syrian Civil War and Yemen Civil War were Middle East crises? The ones with 10x this death toll just a few years prior?

      Is Sudan part of the Middle East? Again, death toll is many times higher.

      Iran is up there with protestor deaths. Looks like 36,000 is now confirmed. And the IRGC bodies are piling up, somewhere around 10,000 – 15,000.

      Sadly, the death toll in Gaza is probably much higher.

      For deaths to be counted, they have to be from direct fire and must have an ID number and a named paired to their body. So think about how many unidentified dead, or people who have been dismembered or vaporized by bonbs. It also doesn’t include indirect deaths from disease, injuries, or starvation.

      I met a refugee from Gaza who left in May 2024. By October of that year, he’d already lost over 80 members of his family.

      I’m not claiming wikipedia is the end all be all source here but rather that the wiki article exists because it the ME crisis was already generally recognized among IR scholars that the Oct 7 and the Gaza war reignited some embers of the past two decades of ME conflict. Yes, there is A LOT of moving parts and varying causes to each one of the Gaza wars effects and subsequent conflicts. As a rough comparison, Oct 7 was like the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. The direct cause, but not responsible for the simmering tensions behind WW1.
