always love these because it reminds you maps used to be less about accuracy and more about vibes and theology. center the world on jerusalem, put heaven at the top, sprinkle in monsters for the unknown. honestly not that different from how people build mental maps today just with fewer dragons drawn in

The term “orientation” literally means “make something face east”, these early maps took it pretty seriously

Medieval maps place East at the top as heaven was thought to be in the east not in the sky. So west is Europe, or the bottom of this map.
Also modern maps focus on physical distance, these maps prioritize sacred distance. The holy land is placed at the center, identifying it as the spiritual, historical, and theological heart of the world.
It’s also a time map showing theological events.
This map shows the UK in the West ( bottom of the map ) on the edge of the known world, far from spiritual salvation.
