    1. Ah yes, let’s all just sell out our ethics for cheap energy. Nice to see someone holding to a principle.

    2. Has she gotten some Russian paranoia or what? Or has she never driven her car to any gas station?

    3. AmyWilliamse on

Cheap energy always comes with strings attached…Europe learned that the hard way

    4. RegularEmpty4267 on

You can’t normalize a relationship with a country that commits crimes against humanity.

    5. Sure, just stop the invasion, pay for the damage, demilitarize the borders and chill the fuck forever

    6. thhvancouver on

Why is Belgium hell bent on appeasing Russia? Not the first time they want to sell the EU out.

    7. Russian energy can’t be cheap as long as they spend every Euro we pay them into building up their military to threaten Europe. Russia makes no secret about their goal to attack and conquer us, like they currently try with Ukraine and did to other countries before.

In consequence we not only have to pay for the oil or gas we would buy from Russia but also to build up our own military even more to deter Russian aggression against us.

This would be pure stupidity. How could arming our biggest enemy ever be a good idea?

Why not, EU gets cheap energy and Russia gets out of Ukraine, a Win-Win.

edit: you guys get a joke ?
It’s a play on „get“ and „get-out“, if Russia gets out of Ukraine, then they gets nothing but defeat, no ?
I’m not advocating for going back to be fully dependent on Russian energy.

OMG, how surprising this must be for the naive, those who believe Hungarians and Slovakians (or random others) are the only reasons for the EU’s sluggish support for Ukraine. I feel sorry for Ukraine- it’s being misled by the hypocrisy of several EU member states, who smile to its face while relying on the so-called ‘black sheep’ to use their veto instead of doing it themselves. It’s so obvious!

    10. His stance is a bit more nuanced this is what he had to say in the parliament

[Article in Belgian paper De Morgen](https://www.demorgen.be/nieuws/geef-mij-dan-eens-een-antwoord-op-de-vraag-waar-we-onze-energie-vandaan-zullen-halen-de-wever-verdedigt-zich-na-uitspraak-over-rusland~b8a47cde/)

“I’m saying that after a possible peace agreement, we should aim for a normalization of relations,” De Wever said in response to criticism from, among others, Vooruit, cd&v, PS, and PVDA. “Which is, after all, the goal of any lasting peace. Otherwise, you should explain to me what the goal of a lasting peace is.”

      and

      De Wever:
“I hear people saying that we must certainly not become dependent again on a regime like that of Putin. But in the meantime, we are already dependent on all sorts of other regimes. We are completely dependent on LNG from the United States. (to Annick Lambrecht of Vooruit) I hear you talking about your stance toward Mr. Trump. Is that not a problem then? We are entirely dependent on the Gulf states for oil. According to you, those are also terrible regimes. (sarcastically) I suggest that you be consistent and call for that to stop as well.”

According to De Wever, for an industrial country like Belgium—“which depends on imports from abroad for 87 percent of its energy supply”—it is impossible to do business only with countries “that are as democratic and liberal as we are.”

      De Wever:
“Because then give me an answer to the question of where we will get our energy from. We would very much like to produce it ourselves. Closing nuclear power plants was not the best idea. And of course we must invest in renewable energy. But is there anyone who believes that in five years we will be able to sustain our energy supply with that alone? Have you looked at how our needs are still increasing?”

More and more their refusal to mobilise seized Russian assets to Ukraine looks like Belgium have someone colluding with Russia. This might be that person.

    12. BelgianPolitics on

Just to be clear: this is not a government stance. Multiple coalition parties have rejected this and so has the Minister of Foreign Affairs. De Wever needs to be careful because the government parties are not amused with his remarks. De Wever is already backtracking.

    13. ZweiterWeltKrieg on

OF COURSE THE RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA SHOULD BE NORMALISED!!

How is that not clear to everyone? The thing is it should be normalised with a „friendly russia“ tht is more or less western aligned! If not then we should still try to normalise but dont revert to 2021… Building up huge military Forces and reliying on LNG Imports is shit for everyone except USA and Gulfstates…

    14. Space_Sweetness on

Most of the frozen Russian assets are held by Euroclear. Euroclear is located in Belgium. Russians and other local European Russia affiliated **traitors** are putting pressure on Belgium

    15. Germany here, we tried Wandel durch Handel (Change through trade), didn’t work – look where we’re now.

    16. Lazy_Art_4814 on

Journalism is so bad nowadays, just putting out headlines that will cause the most outrage and thus clicks. His stance on Euroclear and Russia are way more nuanced and do make a lot of sense. But hey, just let’s only react to clickbait headlines 🤷‍♂️

    17. I think our politicians do politics with ego and not with the interest of the european citizen in mind…

    18. When we suspected his blocking of the seizure of the Russian bank reserves in the EU was due to his sympathy with Moscow, we were being told that it was totally inappropriate to think so.

So can we agree now that he is a Vatnik?

    19. Dennisthefirst on

      Headline should read,
„EU’s Kallas rejects Belgian PM’s call to finance Putin’s war crimes against Ukraine“

    20. Bicentennial_Douche on

We could all just fart in his general direction. There’s his „cheap energy“.

    21. EU needs a reform. It needs to be more democratic and the majority vote has to rule.

If not then EU will be only a plaything and a tool for foreign powers. This will lead to the spreading of war and suffering on the European continent.

We need to be able to kick these Putin and Trump cocksucking compromats out of the union and make their minority vote be just that.

Veto rights have ruined the UN and will ruin the EU.
