‘What remains is the Homeless Income Cut Off (HICO) – the minimum income needed to stay housed after every possible cutback. Below this line, the risk of homelessness rises sharply.’ Anti-poverty think tank Maytree notes that social assistance programs are Canada’s biggest housing program allowing more than one million households to pay rent every month.
The amount most provide for housing is a joke compared to rising rent costs. And if people get a roommate, since it might cover half a rent, they claw some back because they’re living with multiple people now. And there’s very few government-subsidized housing options for the poor too.
My partner’s parents are on ODSP, and it’s appalling how bad off they are. I have apprentices who make more in a week than ODSP pays in a month. I offered to let them live on our property, only to find out odsp will reduce what they’re given unless they’re paying rent, which I don’t need from them. Solution? I’d have to rent to them as tenants and take money from ODSP to cover their rent in order for them to retain their benefits.
With the cost of living and skyrocketing food costs they’ve gone beyond legislated poverty into enforced poverty. If the husband gets a job, he can only make X dollars before odsp claws back money from both of them. If he gets a full time job at any income they’ll be worse off than they are now.
This is an ongoing state of bullshit that transcends governments. Ford is allowing it, Wynne allowed it, whoever replaces Ford is likely to continue on. It’s just insulting to pay such huge amounts in taxes only to see the people who need help the most treated so poorly.
