Have you seen the environmental cost of golfcourses? Let’s close them first. Then go to data centers.

    2. It’s time to rethink AI.

There’s simply no sort of practical application that requires these things having ginormous data centers. Nothing about that model makes any sort of sense.

AI should be local, independent and not weighed down with data center network access.

Ideally, a personal assistant that has no outside connections.

It’s absolutely moronic from every perspective except achieving total information control and establishing dependence.

There’s no reason local AI can’t work, there’s been a lot of independent projects with lightweight models that run locally.

This entire thing is a racket.

Corporations seem hell bend in incorporating AI into everything, but most people seem to hate it. Remember when we had Twitter on refrigerators? American corporations have a history of going overboard with this garbage.

It absolutely is but we won’t because ceos are absolutely obsessed with it, ignoring its many shortcomings.

    6. Too late now. Universities are doubling down on AI here, At least the courses are being made with AI in mind. I had a teacher saying „I expect you all to use AI, I think it strange if you dont use AI, but I want you to understand what you are asking it and what its generating to you“. My university even wanted to create a master degree in AI.. so yeah. We reached a point that teachers give half assed classes expeting us to study using AI… If you can´t run from it, hide from it, then just accept it

It’s time to seize the means of production. As it has been for all of our lifetimes.

Why nobody gave a shit about the environment before this? Nobody’s done anything yet nobody’s gonna do anything now. Who gives a shit? We’re all fucked anyway

The environmental cost of a data center can easily be mitigated by other sources of power. Unfortunately, we have an administration that is hellbent on keeping us on oil and coal.

AI has enormous potential to make our lives better, but it has to be used in the right way. It annoys me to no end that we expand a tons of power to make stupid videos or stupid pictures.

Using AI for scientific research development and improving lives is where it should be focused

Was time to quit when they were developing it lmao. People are obsessed with making and sharing stupid shit though.

When has environmental impact ever caused an industry or company to do anything that could harm its profits without intervention from the government?

      Nothing will happen.

It’s interesting that there is regulation surrounding nuclear power plants, but not this. As far as I understand the environmental impact on the surrounding communities is devastating, but it’s ok because techbros want this.

Just a couple of deranged techbros. My, oh my. Can someone tell them “no”, please?

When it comes to doing less with more, no industry comes close to AI in the speed of improvements.   We sre talking about 200 fold improvement since GPT3 days.

Growth is driven but greater demand and higher model capabilities

Ai disagrees and gives a counter arguement that a lot more is spend on human resources.

      Sam Altman agrees

    15. This is their “too big to fail” moment. They don’t have the exposure that Banks did back in 2008 and before. They don’t have the insurance like Banks did! Now they’re buoying their investments in AI in infrastructure so they can eventually be bailed out by the government! Just reading about a 10 Billion with a big ass B single planned data center for Meta.

    16. astrozombie2012 on

AI is a niche tech, it’s not supposed to be used by everyone in every industry for any reason. Currently just a giant circlejerk of companies trading money back and forth creating a giant bubble. It should never have gotten this big and it’s guaranteed to fail and implode soon enough.

    17. Imagine if we just focused on a couple useful aspects of AI instead of force-feeding it to us wherever possible, we wouldn’t have this problem then.

Every time the world makes progress with reversing environmental damage something comes out to make sure the damage continues and gets worse. For example in the 2000s it was the SUVs becoming popular that at the time completely undid all the work the EU did on reducing its emissions.

      😂😂😂
We are just using a miniscule amount of the Energy of earth and the solar system, and thats already too much?

How do we even want to advance further 🤣

    20. This isn’t AI.  This isn’t going to ever develop into AI.  We’ve improved an LLM search engine and we’re acting like we made a machine god to deliver us from the hellish world we’ve created.

We’re burning energy and resources for what is primarily used for google searches and making memes.

AI is a lie that we were sold by tech bros.  We’re no closer to AI than to fusion power – both of which are forever “10 years away”

I have no doubt “AI” will be used as a scapegoat to fire a ton of workers in preparation for the global depression we’re careening towards -but it won’t be because it actually replaces human productivity

    21. Altruistic_Outcome36 on

What? Of course not? We’re closer to achieving AGI than ever before, why, we should double down and create four times as many as we have now! /j but what do you think is going to happen? God I wish I hadn’t missed.
