A key question mark is Marseille. The current socialist Mayor, Benoit Payan, got around 37% but the far right, just behind him, got 35%. The left-wing/radical-left LFI party got around 12%. However, socialist Mayor Payan refused any alliance between his list and LFI’s one, instead asking for the LFI list to be withdrawn so that the LFI electors vote for socialist Payan. Payan’s choice to stay away from LFI is probably motivated by how controversial LFI is, with many criticising what they call an extremist party. However, others criticise Payan for refusing the alliance, pointing out how Payan’s strategy could lead the far right to win the election if Payan doesn’t get the support from LFI voters.

So RN won’t win, and all this hype about the growing popularity of the far right is just to create an atmosphere of alarm?

With more the 40% of the voters that didn’t voted I don’t think you can make a lot of deduction of the results.
