I’m an adult today and I will work until I die more than likely.
The state pension won’t exist and no member of my family has seen past 65 anyway.
I suspect children today are going to have bigger problems than retirement. We are likely moving into a world that is far less stable than it had been for a very long time.
People can’t have it both ways. Retirement age has hardly changed in 45 years while life expectancy increases and employee’s National Insurance rate has been slashed by 30% in recent years.
What do people expect?
There seems to be a real challenge between the notion AI is going to replace every service job within the next 5 years and that individuals will then have to work longer and later before being able to retire.
With my health issues I will be lucky to even see my 60s, This is unfair borderline slave labour
So until we die. Neither of my parents made it to 75. I know that’s not the case for everyone but still. People will either have to claim incapacity benefits before state pension or they’ll die. Only some will be able to continue working full time.
State pension won’t exist once I get into my 60s, good job I have a private pension.
The state pension was set at an age when it was created to kick in at about 5 years under life expectency. Life expectency has since ballooned. This is where it should be. We should not be funding a decade of holiday for 65-75yos who are (these days) generally completely able to work.
(OBVIOUSLY if they can’t work they shouldn’t need to – but then they go on disability, not state pension)
Be good if working people could save for our own private pensions without them putting limits on things such as salary sacrifice, and pumping up our taxes to keep the triple lock going
Britain will be a Different place by the time they even reach 75
Everyone after boomers and gen x are pretty much screwed … But that won’t stop them acting like the most hard done by gen .
When the pension was initially conceived in Britain, the retirement age was higher than average life expectancy. I don’t think people appreciate the level of prosperity the west had had up until this point. An aging Demographic and a generous welfare state introduces problems we have never had to face before.
I reckon the whole concept of ‚retirement age‘ will cease to exist and everyone will be expected to work until their private pension is large enough. Anyone without X amount in a private pension will be entitled to a means tested benefit as replacement to the state pension.
The real problem with just increasing the pension age is that although the life expectancy has gone up, the healthy life expectancy hasn’t gone up as much and in fact since COVID has started dropping while life expectancy is still (slowly) going up.
That is just data up to 2024 and I’m guessing that more COVID based shenanigans will continue to cause problems for the population.
I’m nearly 30 and I have absolutely no expectations of ever retiring. Paying into a pension feels like a complete waste of time personally.
I’m nearly 40 and am fairly certain I’ll be working until I’m 75, too.
I mean, obviously I’ll be dead before that but still.
Kids should be encouraged to put into private pensions and avoid workplace ones.
You should switch companies every 5 years or so for your own salary growth but having a load of shitty pensions is worthless. I’ve been paying into the same one since 18, it’s great to look at. I feel comfortable about my future.
How many healthy 70 year olds do you know? Unless medicine advances by then, I don’t see it being a realistic option. I do think robots will be doing more elderly care though. They are quite close already.
And society wonders why people dont want kids. The future doesn’t look bright for us let alone a,whole new generation.
I set up junior SIPPs for my kids when they were born. I only put a little in each month (have a trust for them that we put more into). Hopefully after decades of compounding it can give them a foundation not to have to work forever or the flexibility not to have to accept a boring job with good pension contributions.
Pensions and retirement won’t exist by the time anyone currently under 40 gets anywhere near retirement age.
We’ll all be working until were classed as disabled or die
The only reason to improve healthcare for the masses in a capitalist society is to maintain your healthy workforce. If people are living longer then yes, you will be expected to work longer.
But on the other hand they’ll make millions from AI, influencing & NFTs.
Can anyone summarise the article, pls? After pissing about with mandatory oookie settings the page wouldn’t even scroll.
So is AI taking most of our jobs, or are we working till we die? Who exactly will employ 70 year olds? There are serious issues swapping jobs at 55, let alone older. All these public pondering will just discourage those less financially sound to stop bothering to save altogether. What is the point in contributing to a failed system? Enjoy life while I can then leave this world on my terms, sounds quite appealing among the doom and gloom.
Hence why a private pension is a con, as they won’t keep drawing that out at 65. I know that you draw out 25% at 55. You all, get so touchy on here.
