      It’s crazy how overlooked much of the PTO is. Because the US Army’s PR was focused in Western Europe, all of their other campaigns are largely unknown. People think the Pacific was dominated by marines when they were a tiny minority there. The US Army had over seven times as many men fighting there than the Marine Corps had. While marines only did 15 amphibious landings, the Army did over 80 in the PTO alone, not even counting the ones they did in North Africa, Europe, and North America.

      The Italian campaign is also heavily underrated, with historians comparing it to the brutality of WW1’s western front. The Battle of Manila was pure savagery.

      Why does the pacific theater seem to have almost 0 cultural relevance in modern narratives about ww2? at least in the US. is it because europe is more culturally similar?

      Rampage: MacArthur, Yamashita, and the Battle of Manilla by James M. Scott. This book is absolutely amazing and, in great horrific detail from survivors and war crime investigations, goes over the battle and destruction of the city. The tossing of infants onto bayonets was rather common. Just absolute barbarism from the Japanese.
