  1. Norway discovering Greenland in 1878? What about the Vikings? Or Hans Egede, the guy that christianed the island founded their capital city Nuuk??

And if native americans discovered the Americas, did native europeans discover Europe? Why is Iceland treated differently from Greenland in that regard?

  2. How were the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands actually discovered by Europeans when Hawaiians already knew about them and there was even some historical inhabitation of them? It’s not like the original discovering people had gone extinct or forgotten that they existed.

This really stupid. All of these places were inhabited by complex civilizations. Discovered for Europe who was at the time throwing their shit out on the streets and escaping plagues maybe.

  4. Russian Pomors have also been to Svalbard, they called it Grumant. They might discover it.

  5. Discovering means putting it on a map in the scientific tradition that is the base of the current civilization. Of course Aztecs knew that they exist and there is land and sea around them, but they didn’t have the knowledge of relative location of their empire to other lands. And our civilization is not based on their scientific tradition, though it incorporated many findings.

So yes – in 16th century Europeans discovered Inca Empire and Inca Empire discovered Europe by finding out that it exists and where it is.

This battle over words is so futile. Pure politics and language control.

  6. Iceland? i would say, definitely case of „Actual European Discovery“.

  7. 1. How is the Netherlands so large in area discovered?

    2. What is the definition of „discover“?

  8. Malvinas/Falkland have archeological evidence of Aónikenk, so not quite sure it’s a European discovery.

Feels like the Netherlands isn’t fully shown on the map. I’m no expert but we get taught we were the first Europeans to travel to Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand and Tasmania
