> The motion, which was tabled by the Glasgow Southside constituency association, passed unanimously at the SNP conference after a bid to withdraw it over being “incomplete” failed.
>The independence motion – the shortest on the 2026 conference agenda – read: “With the achievement of a self-governing and independent country coming ever closer this Conference commends and recommends to the UK Government that it commences preparations for the time to come when it may no longer be able to rely upon **continuing subsidies from Scotland**.”…
> “It does have some pretty serious emissions,” he said. “Yes, of course, we should encourage the UK Government to prepare for the time when it may **no longer continue to receive subsidies from Scotland**….
Scotland doesn’t subsidise the UK, Scotland is subsidised by the UK as confirmed by the SNP’s own numbers, the GERS.
Bold move. Gonna lose out on something substantial apparently. Somebody needs to go find out exactly what that is before it’s too late.
We’re a massive net receiver in the UK yet the SNP have people convinced we’re somehow subsidising the entire nation.
I am one of the few fiscally conservative nationalists and I will feel so much joy when the SNP are forced to introduce an austerity package that makes Osborne look like Corbyn.
All nationalism is bad.
These guys are just limp MAGA. Very much more in common with Reform than either would like to admit.
Honestly I can’t wait for Scottish independence. They can then take the subsidy just like our NHS got the £2bn Brexit money.
#sarcasm
More money for everyone else! That‘ s what they mean by Scottish subsidies, yes?
Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the SNP leadership involved in a massive amount of corruption and embezzlement over the last few years? Why are Scottish voters taking them seriously
It’s those of us in the Home Counties + London that are subsidising the rest of the Uk, every other region/country is a net receiver. I wouldn’t mind us breaking away from both the Scottish + English nationalists at this point.
Scotland currently has an 26.2 billion pound deficit (2025-2026 figures aren’t out yet). That’s 11.6% of Scottish GDP. How does the SNP plan to pay for that plus its share of the national debt plus all of the economic costs that come from not being part of a large established economy? Part of the money that goes from Scotland to Westminster covers spending that affects the country as a while, so Scotland’s going to need to assume all of the responsibilities Westminster currently has.
A new country with a big deficit where cutting spending would be a political disaster will mean potential borrowers either won’t lend money to an independent Scotland or would lend money but at higher interest rates, which will just add more to an independent Scotland’s deficit.
The pettiness in me really wants Scotland to be independent just for the SNP is fail in all their promises, completely screw up their economy and the slow realisation they fell for MAGA type bullshit and lies
Though I’m sure they’ll still blame the English.
Hmm. The only things I can think of are oil, which can’t easily be cashed Scottish since the UK funded a lot of the setup and exploration, and (coincidentally) renewable energy. Neither are exactly ’subsidies‘. Silly political posturing
The article is paywalled, but surely everyone knows that any claim Scotland is a net contributor to the UK financially is untrue??
Ahahahahahahaha
Scotland… subsidising the rest of the UK?
Aahahahahaha
They might want to check which regions of the UK are net contributors and net recipients… Scotland is not in the net contributor list, that’s for sure
Why does Westminster continue to subside Scotland? It’s clear that the Scottish nationalists aren’t grateful for the subsidy or even aware that it exists. All we’re doing is funding luxury public spending for Scotland that Scottish nationalists can then use to argue that Scotland is „better“ than the rest of the UK and should be independent.
Are the SNP preparing for the closure of naval yards? It’s British government policy for navel vessels to be produced within the UK.
The UK Government would like the SNP ‚to prepare for the loss of…50,000 jobs including; HMRC Cumbernauld and Falkirk, The DWP and FCDO in East Kilbride and the MOD in Rosyth‘
Hmmmm if only we had a referendum to pull out of something succeed so we could look at how much the leavers got right or wrong regarding the benefits and how much of a financial hit one took 🤔
