New Jerseyans about to discover they were never really Italians
StrongFaithlessness5 on
The law changed about 1 year ago and we did it because public offices were literally blocked by citizenship requests.
The reason was that the old system allowed everyone with Italian roots to get citizenship, even people who had a relative that left Italy about 150 years ago. Now, of course during these 150 years these people had children, which means that there are millions of people asking for Italian citizenship and if they are rejected, they sue the office. Now, imagine public offices and tribunal courts literally blocked by millions of requests. All of this for nothing, because the entirety of these people want the citizenship to come to Europe or other countries, not Italy, because the Italian passport is very strong, so it’s not like they come here to work or other things, justifying all the efforts of the public offices.
I’m not sure there are actually other countries with this insane old system.

Italy is complicated as it is, no need to import the American Contagion?

I’ve noticed a trend, people returning to countries their parents left bringing in outside wages. This spikes the cost of housing that locals cannot compete with and pisses them off.

It was abused by everyone looking for church documents by a great great great grandfather to get a EU passport despite they themselves never visited Italy or speak Italian. Good for them that they fixed it.

Did Italy pass the SAVE Act too?

No it hasn’t. There are multiple cases still up for review dealing with the issues this decree law has created. One of which being retroactivity: if you were born during a time when the Italian government recognized you as a citizen (which is what jus sanguinis is), this law stripped you of that recognition if you were unable to have already gone through the process of getting it on paper by an arbitrary date. No warning, no justification, just “you were a citizen (we just weren’t aware of your existence because your ancestors couldn’t read or write), now you’re not.”

Interesting article – first time I learnt that Italy as a country has only been around since 1861. Always would have thought it was way earlier than that

I think it’s worth pointing out that the way to get citizenship by descent in italy is still amongst the most generous in Europe

Having roots in a place should not give you the rights to citizenship if you’ve never lived there nor contributed to the country. Canada recently had something introduced that seemed similar, and I would have to look into it but my opinion is the same.
I would see having roots to a country that you have never lived in being beneficial and should be seen positively when applying for citizenship because of the historical ties. But again, it is not a free pass.

I’m a Canadian with Italian roots. When I was in Italy, I was instantly reminded that I was just some Canadian guy with an Italian name.

Dude! That’s it! Italy will never have a half decent baseball team ever again… they beat the USA in the 2026 WBC and it will go down in history as Italy’s best baseball performance of all time that will never be bettered…

Meanwhile their opponents for tonight, Puerto Rico, are demanding a forfeit.

Where’s the uproar on reddit for Italy being so anti-immigration?
Oh double standards you say?
Oh, triple standards because it’s only bad when people from the USA that are Republicans do it.
