Phillips Payson O’Brien: “Astonishingly, President Trump and his aides were caught unprepared when Iran, under air assault from the United States and Israel, retaliated by targeting shipping in the Persian Gulf region and specifically through the Strait of Hormuz. Military planners have pointed out for decades that the waterway—through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passes—is highly vulnerable to Iranian assault. But the Trump administration acknowledged in classified briefings, CNN reported last night, that it did not make provisions for a closure because officials assumed that such a move would hurt Iran more than the United States.

“In its failure to anticipate Iran’s reaction, the administration ignored a dynamic that former Defense Secretary James Mattis, a first-term Trump appointee, was fond of pointing out: Once hostilities begin, ‘the enemy gets a vote.’ U.S. leaders have drastically underestimated the Iranian regime’s ability to survive, adjust, and strike back. Just two weeks into a war that began at a time of the president’s choosing, the U.S. appears uncertain about what to do next.”

Trump’s payoff matrix is pretty simplistic – everything is a negotiation in which he wants the other side to capitulate completely – kiss my ring approach. At the same time, he is not pretty deliberate and likes limited effort tasks. A lot of short cut mentality. Plus he has surrounded himself with radical secretaries and bellicose allies (dictators and field marshals)

Very likely he was emboldened by success of Venezuelan operation where almost immediately the second in line capitulated to US demands.

Or perhaps he hoped Israel will do most of the fighting (like last year’s) and he would swoop in with headline grabbing bombs.

Ultimately why he didn’t plan for it – incompetence + hubris! What else?

He doesnt need too..the war is over, america won. Not even sure why this is still up the war has been over for awhile now..at least that is what Trump is saying, while he is still bombing Iran.

This is probably the most incompetent government in US history, but I refuse to believe this risk wasn’t brought up again and again before the first attack started. Are we sure it’s incompetence, and not part of some other goal?

There is no way this was not planned for. It’s literally Iran’s only play

  7. There was no plan to begin with. When the dust settles I’m sure we will find out that all of this was to benefit Trump’s family investments in the Middle East and military defense companies. His sons invest directly in drone companies and son-in-law has significant Middle East investments. This is no different than the Trump coin pump and dump. Always follow the money.

As a Canadian I see Trump and company as a bigger threat to us than a religious tyrant on the other side of the world. The worst thing for our hemisphere would be Trump emboldened and gratified by a military triumph. I don’t wish ill on American friends, but I hope this war will be widely understood to be strategic mistake, fully owned by Trump.

When small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set.

  10. > The U.S. and Israel quickly gained air supremacy over Iran and now have the ability to hit almost any target they choose.

What would be the definition of air supremacy here? Does Iran have an air force that can contest US and Israeli air power? Absolutely not, Iranian air force is non-existent. Can US and Israeli air force fly anywhere over Iran without being at risk? Absolutely not.
