Wow, so Americans can only say „no kings“ if they are allowed to?

  2. SamtheCossack on

Willing to bet they hand out waivers to this rule like candy… to the events they like.

Requiring permits for protesting is the most un-American thing imaginable.

    >Additionally, Babcock pointed out that limiting permits to only the weekdays hinders the availability for people who typically work a day job.

    >“ I mean, for our event personally, I organized it on a Sunday just to give everybody the opportunity to attend that wants to, “ Babcock said. “We’re all taxpayers, and we all want to be able to use the people’s house as we see fit. So, I think a lot of people might be a little disenfranchised by the decision to limit the ability to host events.”

Take a page out of Chicago protest book and just put everyone in their cars and clog downtowns! It works well here every time!

For such a libertarian-styled state they seem to be afraid of the first amendment.

  7. VigilantVet on

Do it anyway. TRULY protest these wannabe kings. It’s fucking go time.

  8. PatSajakMeOff on

I forget, did the colonists file for a permit with the King of England for the Boston Tea Party? You don’t need a permit to exercise a right the constitution explicitly gives you.

  9. Mountain_Reveal7849 on

I would show up anyway. You need a permit to protest ? You need a permission slip to say everything around you is bringing and 10x worse under Republicans and Donald Trump.

    >Organizers of the upcoming “No Kings” rally in Helena say that a new state rule banning permits for weekend rallies on the Capitol grounds violates their First Amendment rights. State officials countered that the new rule, quietly instituted just last month, was intended to save money.

    >The update to permitting guidelines on the Montana.gov site, which has not been previously reported, states that public events requiring a permit “may only occur on weekdays and between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., excluding holidays.”

    >The revisions apply to all state-owned or leased spaces or grounds at the Capitol Complex. The policy requires a permit for any public event that uses “state resources, requires setup of any structures, materials, displays, or requires clean-up.” A public event is defined as “any event that is open to the public and to which the public will have full access.”

    >The Capitol Complex has long been a preferred location for protests, government press conferences, ceremonies and other public gatherings, including “No Kings” rallies that have drawn thousands of protestors to Helena, most recently on a Saturday last October. The next nationwide “No Kings” rally is scheduled for Saturday, March 28.

    >Previously, the Montana.gov site said that permits were available “on most weekends and most holidays.” State officials within the General Services Division, a component of the Department of Administration that oversees the Capitol, approved revisions to its permitting guidelines last month.

The DOA was not required to notify the public of the changes, Williams said.

Nothing brings more attention to protests than trying to silence them.

  11. It is unfortunate that we have allowed governments to force permitting for exercising our rights to freedom of assembly…

  12. That_90s_Kid_ on

    So they do it anyway.

They gonna lock up a million people?

This is covered under the first amendemnt. Show up.

  13. Marionberry_Bellini on

Yeah I’m gonna go ahead and not take any protest movement/organization seriously if they back out because they don’t have a permit.

„the right of the people peaceably to assemble“

I want to point out ‚peaceably‘ does not mean non disruptive, it means non-violent.

Time to disrupt things in Montana

  15. It’s not freedom of speech if your local governments can dictate when and where you can speak

  16. marutiyog108 on

Yes get a permit from the government to protest the government. Im sure the founding fathers wrote letters to the king kindly asking permission to throw tea into the harbor

  17. Repulsive-Royal-5952 on

This doesn’t thwart shit. It just means that the permitting process is unconstitutional and they no longer need a permit. They never did.

  18. hayyimsandwich on

well, nothing inspires protest more than attempts to stop it. so let it rip montana! show em what you got!

  19. „why won’t you people just peacefully protest?“ well, when you eliminate all dates and times to protest, guess what? People are going to do so at times that are gonna be hella inconvenient for everyone. People forget the civil rights protests weren’t just on weekends, outside rush hour and after business hours.

  20. “The right of the people to peaceably assemble is a cornerstone of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, protecting the right to gather for protests, demonstrations, and, in some contexts, to petition the government for a redress of grievances. It enables citizens to express views collectively, particularly in public forums like streets and parks”

  21. strandedinkansas on

Really taking advantage of the permitting provisions in the 1st amendment../s

  22. dmstattoosnbongs on

Our local government is a group of carpetbaggers. Actions are real. Seeming is being. Sure seems like our system doesn’t care about the citizens. The actions back up the narrative.

  23. BitchinAssBrains on

Luckily you don’t need a permit for your right to assemble! This is just a pretext for cops to escalate to violence at will.

  24. Well, a protest with permits and without disruption is just a fucking parade. So, do it anyways. No organizers needed, get out there and ACTUALLY protest

  25. excitablegibben on

If your protest requires government approval it’s not a protest. It’s a gathering of like minded individuals.

  26. cloudsmiles on

Do it anyway. People need to wake up, limiting free speech has been argued in the courts, and it has it’s own restrictions.

  27. billabong049 on

LOL that’s not the way protests work, government.  You don’t get to fucking decide whether we get to hold one or not.

  28. South-Pen9573 on

1A does not say “Freedom to assemble… provided you have all the proper permits”.

  29. Been getting hammered by right wing sheep about the constitution for decades, only to have them cheer on it being completely rejected by the government now. The don’t tread on me crowd is fine with being tread upon as long as they like the flavor of the boots.

  30. CORI_Scarecrow on

I didn’t know we needed to be allowed to protest? Kind of defeats the purpose. Go anyways, fuck em.
