Because the reason should be explosively obvious to anyone with a tenth of a brain.

Idk if they knew he was in a coma, why would they make him the new Ayatollah? given that the position doesn’t have to be hereditary + especially when waking up from a coma is often a straight 50/50

His appointment is as a figurehead. Although, if he is conscious he may have some influence others are pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Possible. He’s pretty much the Schrodinger’s Ayatollah at this point. Either he’s alive and well and just trying not to catch a missile, or he’s basically dead and the IRGC is doing a weekend at Bernie’s to maintain the Regime and keep the missiles away from the real head of state.
Either way, trying to avoid missiles and these reports feel like a bait to get someone to step outside.

Seems likely, as they didnt even show a PHOTO of him. Like, cmon, does nobody have cameras anymore?
He supposedly has lost some of his limbs, as well… Yet in his latest proclamation, he says ‚fight to the end‘ basically, and that the war will not stop. I just don’t get how he’s so optimistic about the situation.

He’s not an ayatollah. That’s a specific rank of shia religious erudition, not a political title. He might get accelerated to that rank as his father did, but Khatami pere still had a reasonably senior rank. Fils does not.

TL;DR- I wish more articles would provide a richer context to what’s going on bc as war history nerd this shit is wild
We are witnessing modern asymmetric warfare happening in an age of 24/7 news feeds and modern weapons systems plus AI 🙁
For the last 40 years Iran has developed a semi-decentralized military structure ( I say semi bc realistically decentralized has such a varying scope depending on who you ask) that involves several elements of the IRGC, Basij, and Artesh.
Each of these elements are designed so they are able to continue combat operations in case of a leadership failure which unlike many of their Arab neighbors whose armies will collapse once one or two layers of leadership are incapacitated
Their military objectives require making this war expensive for enemy factions to pursue long-term by damaging the political will to continue fighting. Iran wins by surviving while enemy factions will have to win by some absolutely silly shit in order to be to extract any value out of the war
In the interest of not making this a longer post, I’ll just say there other elements I didn’t discuss like their kinetic capabilities, proxies, NATOs response, and a whole host of their shit that makes reading this seem like an anime
There’s no real off-ramp for this type of war, it’ll just bleed other ongoing conflicts from 2026 onward
What a time to be alive
