This completely defeats the point of giving workers a day off to spend with family.

    2. No, that should be „Ford government strips rights from workers on 2 public holidays“. You don’t need to shop every fucking day of the year FFS. Essential services still need to run. Sucks for those workers but is necessary. This is not necessary.

    3. This has already been the norm for many years. It’s been the municipalities that have had the discretion to allow this.

    4. As an Albertan I had no idea stores were closed in Ontario on those days. I don’t think there are any such rules in AB, certainly not for family day or Victoria day. I dunno, maybe we don’t need to have access to in store shopping 365 days a year.

This is terrible!! So, have retail employees cater to the shopping *wants* (not *needs*) of provincial government employees that’ll still be getting these 2 days off? Talk about blatant class discrimination.

I hope that retail employers, as well as their employees, push back on this nonsense. As is, there are many exemptions that retailers can rely on to stay open on those provincial holidays. But don’t tell me that some already dead suburban mall needs to stay open on Victoria Day. That’s just utter nonsense.

I don’t have much of an issue about this I think as long as you can get 1.5x working on a holiday and someone wants to work that day in retail it’s not much of a big issue. The issue stems with a workforce being forced the work a holiday, there should be an employment standard on those days to make it optional

They say they’re going to allow shopping on Family Day and Victoria Day, but shops are already allowed to be open Family Day. So the only change is Victoria Day. Maybe they should know the law they’re amending before deciding on it.
