If you use Samsung TVs, look into TIzenTube. Also the same for AndroidTVs. trust me.

How much has Youtube paid the content generators?
rahuliitk on
$40 billion in ad revenue and the reward is making tv ads even less skippable, which is kind of the perfect reminder that once a platform gets big enough it starts acting exactly like the stuff it replaced.pretty grim.

I guess I’ll go ahead and mirror my laptop with adblock to my TV instead of using Roku apps then. they can get no ad revenue from me.

Just know those ads are wasted on me. That’s when I just go back to my phone for 30 seconds. I’m sure everybody does the same.

Adblock extensions. Router/network level ad blocking. Donate to Patreon/Ko-fi of those sites/creators that don’t monetize through ad revenue. Make ads irrelevant. Money talks, and it’s the only thing they will listen to.

What bugs me is that even if you subscribe to YouTube Premium they still give you adverts (albeit images not videos) in Google TV. You can’t escape them.

I block all of YouTube’s ads. That includes the unskippable 30-second ads. If one pops up that’s link through Reddit, I just close it and don’t watch it.

Revenue is not profit. Iirc, Youtube wasn’t profitable for a very long time. Have they become profitable yet? End of the day the service needs ads. Youtubers aren’t doing this for free and if the profit stream isn’t there for them they’ll quit, which will worsen the service even further. You need ads or to pay at some level for the service to be successful. This isn’t Warner Bros or Discovery. This is like telling ma and pa shops to eat dirt because bigger, richer entities make huge profits.

I’m sure one day before you can use the dephrilabrator you will have to watch an ad or two.

I had an epiphany a while back. I am willing to pay for netflix, apple tv, or whatever other streaming service, but had some weird angst about YT premium. Like it wasn’t worth it. Except.. I probably watch 75% of my content on there.
So I leaned into that instead, and dropped other services. Can’t say I regret it. This ad policy sucks for TV users but frankly if you watch enough content on there I think it’s worth the spend.

YSK: you can effectively block all YouTube ads permanently by running the app or website through Firefox or Brave browser. The UI is a little clunky but it’s better than unskippable ads.

Revenue is an interesting though kind of useless number on its own. Alphabet doesn’t share YouTube’s operating income. I remember reading they were unprofitable for about ten years after the acquisition but I imagine they’re earning a fairly good profit now.

Why do people mention revenue? Shouldn’t they mention profit or profit per hour of video or something?
We don’t know what the revenue is going towards.

It honestly should be illegal to build a platform, then make it worse to incentivize people to buy your subscription service. I refuse to buy it out of spite.

Use a VPN and connect via Albania. Where there’s no YouTube adverts and far less copyright takedowns.
